Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

These findings, which are explained here in understandable, nontechnical language, form the basis of his Sound Marital House theory of marriage, which guides the new therapy. This therapy has two goals: changing the marital friendship and teaching couples to regulate conflict.

His influence has spanned decades, but that influence has become so much a part of mainstream psychology that the ingenious nature of his work has almost been forgotten. With a new introduction by Peter Kramer, this landmark book is a classic in its field and a must-listen for anyone interested in clinical psychology or personal growth.

In Trauma and the Soul, Donald Kalsched continues the exploration he began in his first book, The Inner World of Trauma (1996)—this time going further into the mystical or spiritual moments that often occur around the intimacies of psychoanalytic work. Through extended clinical vignettes, including therapeutic dialogue and dreams, he shows how depth psychotherapy with trauma’s survivors can open both analytic partners to "another world" of non-ordinary reality in which daimonic powers reside, both light and dark.

Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war.

Historia
A clinical psychologist’s exploration of the modern dilemmas women face in the wake of new motherhood. When Molly Millwood became a mother, she was fully prepared for what she would gain: an adorable baby boy; hard-won mothering skills; and a messy, chaotic, beautiful life. But what she did not expect was what she would lose: aspects of her identity, a baseline level of happiness, a general sense of well-being.

Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross created her classic seminal work, On Death and Dying, to offer us a new perspective on the terminally ill. It is not a psychoanalytic study, nor is it a "how-to" manual for managing death. Rather, it refocuses on the patient as a human being and a teacher, in the hope that we will learn from him or her about the final stages of life.

Fortunately, there is an alternative. It Takes One to Tango is a groundbreaking guide that shows how one determined partner can spark lasting, significant change in a marriage.

great audible book
I really enjoy the narrator and their ability to embrace each individual speaking in the book. Hearing this book made the content very easy to digest. Very informative on family therapy and practices as the entire book is essentially a case study (open to termination of a family). I imagine I will listen to this book again someday.

Very helpful (and responding to another review)
Good examples and theory together. If only more of us could receive this kind of therapy. I wish the concepts could be taught in school rather than algebra; it is just as complicated and would help us all more.
I read a review that mentioned the author’s description of the teenage girl’s appearance; I agreed it sounded weird. However, at least in this edition that I listened to, the words were not quite the same and it made some sense in context and sounded more honest than weird, although there might be a better way to write about it.

Exactly what I was looking for
This book does an excellent job of anecdotally demonstrating the complexity of family therapy and provides ample processing throughout. I love how Gus shares some of the gray areas of his interventions (some would call “mistakes”). Any family therapist who listens to this book will find it highly relatable and informative. If you are a marriage and family student or conditioner, this is a must read. this is the best work demonstrating the mindset of family systems and how change works. Although it’s hard to really pinpoint the principles and tenants of experiential therapy that is exactly the point the narrative model with this family creates a Greek case of how to be a family therapist. as a marriage therapist myself good luck it’s a hard ride, but it’s a good ride.
