Resumen del Editor

A Finnish journalist, now a naturalized American citizen, asks Americans to draw on elements of the Nordic way of life to nurture a fairer, happier, more secure, and less stressful society for themselves and their children.

Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life - from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare - was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension. To understand why life is so different in the US and Finland, Partanen began to look closely at both.

In The Nordic Theory of Everything, Partanen compares and contrasts life in the United States with life in the Nordic region, focusing on four key relationships - parents and children, men and women, employees and employers, and government and citizens. She debunks criticism that Nordic countries are socialist "nanny states", revealing instead that it is we Americans who are far more enmeshed in unhealthy dependencies than we realize. As Partanen explains step by step, the Nordic approach allows citizens to enjoy more individual freedom and independence than we do.

Partanen wants to open Americans' eyes to how much better things can be - to show her beloved new country what it can learn from her homeland to reinvigorate and fulfill the promise of the American dream - to provide the opportunity to live a healthy, safe, economically secure, upwardly mobile life for everyone. Offering insights, advice, and solutions, The Nordic Theory of Everything makes a convincing argument that we can rebuild our society, rekindle our optimism, and restore true freedom to our relationships and lives.

Wow! Food for thought

As a strong supporter of free markets and small government, I found these ideais most interesting. There are one or two notes to which the author should have given better thought, but the book is excellent anyway.

To all my fellow Americans

A must read for anyone who has ever wondered could things be better?. Perhaps this book should be a prerequisite for anyone running for office or to any position in public service

Eye opening

Reading this during the 2020 Election season in the US, where I’ve already never felt less patriotic, my eyes were opened even further to the glaring disparities and shortcomings of American government. I know I’d not manage a Nordic winter very well, but the idea of all people working for the greater good, in addition to their own personal growth and financial wellness, not with the intention of getting ahead no matter who gets hurt along the way, certainly does sound appealing! I enjoyed learning from this book.

A must read/listen for all; thought provoking and worthy of your time.

Like I said this book was thought provoking and worthy of your time. There were a few chapters that I lost interest in for ten or fifteen minutes just because honestly certain issues like childcare are no longer an issue for me or it got a tad bit more into policy detail than I have an attention span for BUT!!!! listen to the whole of it if you commit to buying it. It's a wonderful bicultural perspective on policy and will open your mind particularly if you
are an American!!!! Excellent overall and so grateful to have read!!!!

Eye Opening

I absolutely loved every second of this book. I believe every single American should be required to read this. So much information is given to help shed light on things and I found myself looking for homes for sale in the Nordic countries :)

Stellar content. Haughty narration.

I've separated my review of the narration from my review of the book's content below:

Narration: When this narrator performed the sci-fi suspense drama "Recursion" by Blake Crouch, she was absolutely fabulous, but in her reading of this nonfiction book, her tone of voice comes off excessively haughty which gets pretty grating after a couple chapters. Every time she reads someone's direct quote, especially the Nordic people's quotes, she makes them sound irritated and snooty. This was especially annoying at the book's end, where she makes a closing sentence that's supposed to sound friendly and optimistic sound cartoonishly ominous. I started reading this book in paper form, but then switched to the audiobook so I could finish it quicker -- if I wasn't in a hurry, I would have gone back to the paper book because the narration was so irritating.

Content: Despite the subpar narration, the content is SO FREAKING GOOD. I frequently yelled out "what!?/omg!/ wtf?!" and I appreciated the author's well-timed use of wit. Anu Partanen is a talented researcher and writer, and she has a great sense of humor -- all of this shines in her writing. I wish that everyone in America was required to read this book, or that Netflix would make a show from it (since that's what would actually get more people to consume it). Five stars to the author. I want an answer from everyone in Congress as to why they're not using the smart policies explained in this book to improve the lives of Americans in "the land of the free".

Yes please

Get through the first chapter or so where it might seem like the start of a romantic novel. Once you get to the education and healthcare portions you will rethink your tolerance for our education and healthcare system here in the USA. Some powerful messages in here, and worth your time.

Excellent if you want details on features that make Nordic countries special

I can’t write a review in full without giving spoilers so I will refrain from doing that and give a short version.

I enjoyed the book and valued learning about what the differences are in the Nordic countries compared to the United States where I live. I can’t quite blame the book for making me face the inadequacies of our system of which I was already well aware.

Every US policy maker and politician should read this book. Sadly, hard facts are not for everyone these days. This book is well researched with facts and makes a great case, and for that I was happy to give it several stars.
