Terrific Book - Gifted Writer

This was a beautifully written memoir of growing up in both suburban Philadelphia and a remote Baboon Camp in Botswana. The author proved a gifted and thoughtful writer even from an early age, as evidenced by excerpts from her childhood journals. Gifted with extraordinary powers of observation and insight. The narrator was generally very good but, it would seem a reasonable expectation, if you are reading a book largely set in Africa, that you would both to know how to pronounce the names of countries like Zambia and Namibia!

Exciting & well-presented, captivating

I enjoyed the span of years detailed in Wildlife, including the back & forth between Botswana & America & the cultural differences in both nations.

Great Book !

What a wonderful book about an amazing childhood! Very glad I read this book and reccomend it to anyone who has always wanted to learn about Africa and what it is like to do research with wild animals. The narration was also excellent!

I long for Botswana

At times, sad, sometimes funny, and often bittersweet. Growing up with 2 sets of rules and expectations is hard.

Best book of the season

This is a beautifully written book. The author has such rich stories. I found myself not want to stop listening. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I enjoyed the book so much very lighthearted and interesting what a great childhood I recommend this book

interesting story with unintended message?

I chose this book bc I lived in Botswana in the 90s and love memoirs and novels by authors from or who lived in that region.

The author definitely lived an unusual childhood. I was glad that towards the end of the book she acknowledged her privilege and her lack of connection to the people of Botswana due to her unique experience living in a very remote location. She didn’t acknowledge that she was also leading a life of privilege compared to most in the US as well.

I found the descriptions of her life in America lacking in much depth or credibility. She goes to an elite private school when not living on protected land in Botswana. The incessant bullying seemed over the top and when it continued even into her senior year, the juvenile behavior lacked credibility, besides being uninteresting to read about. What also lacked credibility was her claim that she had no interest in applying to colleges and half heartedly applied to Harvard — and got accepted. The girl who is the most unsophisticated, immature and persistent bully gets accepted at Georgetown. Either this didn’t happen as described or this is really how our elite system works—attend an elite K-12 school and then easily get into a highest tier college regardless of character or effort. For the vast majority of us Americans, life is quite a bit harder and less predictable. I found this message of the story particularly offensive and it affects my opinion of the entire book.
