It’s week 5 of the 2024-25 UNC Basketball Summer Roster Preview Series. In the first three installments, we discussed the incoming freshmen: James Brown, Ian Jackson, and Drake Powell. Last week we kicked off the sophomores with Zayden High, and we now turn to his classmate, and returning UNC point guard, Elliot Cadeau. After a solid freshman year, but with less than ideal shooting numbers, we expect a big sophomore jump from Cadeau. We expect him to see more minutes and to see better shooting numbers that derive from more confidence and experience. The end of July is upon us and that means it’s time for the Top 10 Most Impactful Moments from UNC Athletics during the 2023-24 academic year. We’re counting down 10 teams, individuals, or specific moments that happened during the season that left a lasting imprint on Carolina. In part three (of three) we’ll take the countdown from 3 to 1, talking about three teams that had great seasons. The Tar Heels had their best season in the young head coaching career of Hubert Davis. His club swept Duke, won the outright ACC Regular Season title, and earned a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they made the Sweet 16. Scott Forbes and the Diamond Heels made the College World Series in his fourth year in charge. But neither Coach Davis or Coach Forbes matched the exploits of rookie head coach Erin Matson, who won her fifth field hockey National Championship (4 as a player, 1 as a coach).

We’ll also discuss Vance Honeycutt (Tar Heel baseball) and Drake Maye (Tar Heel football) who both wrapped up legendary UNC careers and were subsequently drafted in the first round of their sport, by the Orioles and Patriots respectively.

The Tar Heels, on Wednesday, made their sixth offer in the class of 2026, this one going to Finnish player Miikka Muurinen (whose mom played for UNC!). Muurinen, at 6’10, can do a little bit of everything and is going to be a great PF for whoever lands his services. Muurinen had a strong showing at Peach Jam, including shooting 50% from three. Jasper Johnson has cut his list to five schools – UNC, Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisville, and Alabama. Also…an interesting update concerning New Zealand’s Julius Halaifonua.

The Tar Heels attended ACC Football Kickoff on Thursday, represented by Conner Harrell, Max Johnson, Power Echols, Kaimon Rucker, and Omarion Hampton, along with JJ Jones acting as a reporter.

Ross Dellenger from Yahoo reports that we might be getting additional scholarships in college athletics.

There are 14 Tar Heels competing in the Olympics. Congrats to Diamond Heels’ pitcher Dalton Pence who has signed with the Rangers.

The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team officially released their 2024-25 non-conference schedule on Wednesday, which includes 12 matchups during the regular season – five games at the Dean E. Smith Center, five games at neutral sites, and two games in true road environments. North Carolina will play 12 non-conference games instead of the typical 11 because of playing a true road game at Hawai’I, which the NCAA rulebook allows to not count against the max 31 regular season games. Coach Bill Robinson also discusses the possibility of playing “5-out” this year and what that looks like.
