Welcome back to my awesome tribe of brain explorers!

Speaking of exploring, I had an experience recently that reminded me of our brain that I am excited to share with you today.

Confession time…. I recently snuck away from you amazing listeners and I took a vacation.

My husband and I took an overseas trip for 2 weeks and it was fantastic.

But it did not start out fantastic unfortunately.

We had a series of unfortunate events when trying to get to our first destination.

All the horror stories of international travel that get lambasted in the movies?

Yep- you guessed it. Happened to us.

    Flights super delayed? Yep.

Crazy Karen’s causing a scene on the plane? Yep.

Changing planes when we were already part way down the runway?

If you said yes, you would be right.

So, what does this all have to do with the brain?

Well, I will give you a hint, the plane had sensors that were going haywire…

Tune in to hear the whole crazy story on today’s episode!

Join me as we dive into:

    • Trying to go with the flow on a crazy flight.

  • 100- Milestone Day!
    Jun 12 2024

    I can’t believe it!

Do you realize what we did together?

We have made it to 100 episodes!

I know, I know, “One Hundred Episodes” feels like an unreal number but it’s true.

We have been through thick and thin on this podcast for almost 2 years so today I want to celebrate our milestone by talking about milestones.

When this whole thing got going, I just had a dream.

I knew that I wanted to help more people but I have finite time in the day.

I wanted to scale up my reach and ramp up the number of people that I helped without sacrificing my family life balance along the way.

And so, I talked with my support team and we realized that launching a podcast as a source of free help for those around me seemed like a winner of an idea.

Now here we are, 2 years later with 100 episodes under our belts and thousands of episodes downloaded and listened to.

It’s quite remarkable what we have done together and I TRULY do mean together with you, my listeners.

There were certainly days where I was tired and I didn’t want to record a podcast but hearing the feedback from people saying how they found this or that episode helpful or insightful truly is a motivating force.

So, celebrate your milestones my fantastic people.

    Lean in to your accomplishments.

The world works so hard to make you feel and play so small but not today-today I want you to really think about everything that you have produced and accomplished in your journey through life!

    Join me for a celebration!

    • The dream that made this podcast a reality.
    • The importance of recognizing and celebrating your milestones.
    • How we can make this community grow even more.

  • 99 - Calming those stormy thoughts
    Jun 5 2024

    Hello my amazing listeners!

I have recently returned from a trip abroad and while I was gone, there were a number of storms in my home region which produced severe winds and even tornados.

And that’s what I want to talk about today- tornados of thoughts if you will.

See many clients have been coming to me lately talking about how when their thoughts get to spiraling, it seems really difficult to get them to stop.

This feeling of endless thoughts swirling in our brains can quickly lead to anxiety or even panic attacks in some.

And for many, I find this is un-ending storm of thoughts frequently is a key cause of their burnout and overwhelm.

So, what do we do about our spiraling thoughts?

Well, there are different ways to approach it but today I want to focus on “Mindfulness.”

Mindfulness is a specific type of meditation and, before you say “But Julie! I don’t know how to meditate,” just know that it’s not necessarily the sit down, close your eyes and breathe deep for 10 minutes type of meditation.

Mindfulness is the idea of getting your way to focus back down to a single thought at a time to try to quiet those spiraling thoughts.

This episode I am going to teach you some basic mindfulness techniques which should help you start to tame those wild, endless thoughts!

    Join me to discuss:

    • The dangers of spiraling, stormy thoughts.
    • How mindfulness can help you tame your storming brain.
    • My 5 sense's technique to help you on your mindfulness journey.

  • 98- Time to make a Perception Check.
    May 28 2024

Summer time is definitely here in Houston!

After going through my case study on Suzie, I really hope that you gained value going through some of the facets of a real-life client’s journey.

As I tried to illuminate in our last show, our journey through mental health and burnout recovery is different for everyone.

With those differences, it can often feel isolating.

We fear judgement for our mental health journey and we fear being a “burden” on others.

Something I tell my clients frequently is “Our perception becomes our projection.”

You see, we are our own worst critic and very often, we impose those thoughts as the perception of others.

    You know what I mean…

You see someone on the street and you think “I just know for sure they are judging the spot on my shirt where I spilled my drink” because WE ourselves are preoccupied with the spot on our shirt where we spilled a drink.

The vast majority of the time though, people are not judging you.

Because they are too busy judging themselves in turn.

We are all frequently in our own heads and not spending one thought judging others because we are too busy judging ourselves.

    Let’s discuss!

Join me as we dive into:

    • Why we spend so much time thinking about the judgement of others?
    • How we subconsciously alter our behavior for the perceived judgement of others.
    • Ways we can try to be mindful of our perceptions to alter our outcomes.

  • 97- Part 6- A final word on Suzie.
    May 21 2024

Oh, my goodness…here we are friends!

    Where you might ask?

Well, we are at the final episode of our case study on my client Suze and her amazing journey of healing from burnout.

We have talked about so many things but ultimately it really comes down to is understanding the things we can control and the things we cannot.

In this conclusion episode of my case study, we touch briefly on how these lessons in Suze’s journey apply to all of my listeners and how some of you might hear these things differently.

Men and Women ARE different and take different lessons to heart.

They also manifest their burdens differently and we need to understand how to help each other in our respective places and perspectives.

I share in this episode the things I needed from my partner in our marriage to make our journey successful and help me recover from motherhood induced burnout.

But the most important lesson I hope that you all take from this case study is this…

No one’s burnout recovery journey is the same as another so it’s about understanding how we can adapt these lessons to each of our own journeys.

This is why you need someone who can hear you and guide you.

This is, unfortunately, why too many people take an online program to help with burnout and fail to make material gains from it.

Everyone needs advice, tools and guidance individualize for their own personal burden.

If you find yourself resonating with some of the lessons, we have discussed in our case study, I really invite you to consider jumping on a free call with me to discover if I can help.

    Join me today for:

    • How men's mental health journey frequently differs from women.
    • The most important lesson for starting to handle your burnout.
    • Ways that I personally shifted the burdens I could control when running my business.

  • 96- Part 5- Why men, women and Suzie need boundaries.
    May 13 2024

Hope you are ready for more burnout fighting knowledge friends!

We have covered a lot of things in the journey of my client Suzie.

As we worked through her time audits and the importance of wellness as well as focusing on her relationships, another really important factor in her recovery journey came up.

You see she would meet with me and do really well for a few days but then as always happens when you try to change for the better, life starts to try to move you back to the homeostasis it thought you were in before.

Now I want to take a moment to point something out- Suzie, if you haven’t guessed is a woman.

Some of the struggles she has had were a result of that- pressures of being the “perfect mom” and trying to perform at a high level in a male dominated field.

It made her feel like she had something to prove and so slowly but surely, she started pulling back on her boundaries.

But these problems are not unique to women.

Men also struggle with boundaries and it all goes back to a root cause.

    The perception of others.

Women its unconsciously more accepted for women to have boundaries or be child focused but they are often perceived as weak for having them or not ambitious enough.

With men, they are expected to be the martyrs- they can’t turn down any assignment or request no matter how bad their mental health is because they are just supposed to keep going and going and going.

When they do have a problem, it’s a “mid-life crisis” or just “a funk” that they are expected to work themselves out of.

But both men and women are deserving of relief from burnout and anxiety.

So, as you listen to this episode of Suzie’s journey, remember that “Suzie” can be any of us.

    Another dive into:

    • The importance of holding onto our boundaries as we start our burnout recovery.
    • How the world reacts to and treats men and women's mental health journeys.
    • Ways that Suzie and I regained control at work and established her professional boundaries without alienating people.

  • 95 - Part 4 - Reconnecting Suzie with Love & Hope
    May 1 2024

Can you believe how quickly April flew by?

Our case study through the journey of my client Suzie continues this week as we talk about the normalcy of the journey sometimes feeling like it was moving up and then down.

Suzie noticed that often she would be doing really well as we worked together but then something would come up and she would stumble a bit.

I often liken it to a spiral staircase with my clients.

Sometimes you are moving upward but because you still see the stairs straight ahead of you, it can feel like you aren’t progressing.

The journey through burnout can have that same sense of feeing like, “Hey I am doing the work but it just seems like I am continually looking at more work? What gives?”

Just when the thoughts of overwhelm started trying to creep back in Suzie’s mind, I make her stop and take care of herself.

I made her take time for her physical health and helped her rediscover some of her creativity.

Essentially, I reminded her that the path to healing isn’t just working with me but also stopping to relax and to rest.

Forcing yourself to take a step back and look around you rather than just at the wall of stairs climbing upward, you realize that you have elevated yourself even while seeming to be just starring forward.

Let’s keep moving through this real life client’s journey on the path from burnout to wholeness.

    Today's discussion includes:

    • Why "2 steps forward, 1 step back" is completely normal.
    • Reconnecting Suzie's relationship to her wellness routines.
    • How we started to heal Suzie's intimate and social relationships.

  • 94- Part 3 - Imposter Syndrome rears its ugly head...
    Apr 24 2024

Happy to see you all again!

We are now in week 3 of my case study of an actual client’s journey with me to help her resolve her burnout and general dissatisfaction with life.

Last week, I walked you through the idea of a time audit so that you can really hone in on how you are spending the hours of your day.

Hopefully you were able to complete at least a baseline of that.

Did it surprise you? Did it make you think?

Hopefully it did one or both and really gave you some ideas to consider about spending your time differently.

That’s not the only reason I had you do it though.

See, what I found with Suzie and many of my clients is that when you are so overwhelmed with the stress and burnout of everything in your life, it can seem never-ending.

Doing the time audit helps should have helped you feel like it was something you could control- a quick win if you will to give you that amazing shot of Dopamine that helps reinforce the results of your journey.

When I did this exercise with Suzie, we found an unexpected trauma trigger point.

Suzie discovered that anytime she tried to rest, it brought back old feelings of when she had been told she was lazy and worthless.

She felt like she would never amount to anything even in the midst of record productivity at work and strong relationships at home.

It brought up the dreaded…. Imposter Syndrome.

Tune into today’s episode to continue on this amazing ride of healing from a real-life client!

Join me for part 3 of our series!

    • Important discoveries from our Time Audit.
    • How we uncovered and started to resolve core memories driving Suzie's Imposter Syndrome.
    • Using the "Ladder Thoughts" system to help process trauma.
