An all-new Star Trek movie-era adventure!

While attempting to settle in as commandant of Starfleet Academy, Admiral James T. Kirk must suddenly contend with the controversial, turbulent integration of an alien warrior caste into the student body—and quickly becomes embroiled in conflict when the Academy controversy escalates to murder. Meanwhile, Captain Spock of the USS Enterprise and Commander Pavel Chekov of the USS Reliant are investigating a series of powerful cosmic storms seemingly targeting Federation worlds—unstoppable outbursts emitting from the very fabric of space. Endeavoring to predict where the lethal storms will strike next, Spock and Chekov make the shocking discovery that the answer lies in Commander Nyota Uhura’s past—one that she no longer remembers….

This clearly was mean to be Uhuras story. It has good potential, but lacks known characteristic behaviour of all characters and there is no solution in the end, which was surprising.

If you look at the history of my reviews, I’m not one of these people who hand out five stars, willy nilly. I read a LOT. I read a lot of science fiction. I have read an awful lot of Star Trek and seen ALL of it, many many times. This is a truly excellent science fiction story and one of the best Star Trek stories I’ve ever read or seen. Also, the narrator “does” Scotty almost exactly like James Doohan. Just wonderful! I cannot recommend this one highly enough!

Exceptional!

The entire book was spent with one character or another debating different sides of different arguments. It would have been a better fit as a Next Generation story, since that's what Picard was famous for. Way too much talk, almost zero action. Both story lines were resolved disappointingly and ambiguously. And the Uhura story line relies on a plot device that, in my opinion, is completely out of character for Uhura.
on the plus side, the narrator does a nice job with most of the voices, though his Captain Terrell voice sounds more like Sulu than his Sulu voice.

Boring and disappointing

Not my favorite story subject. Cannot get into these stories with Kirk as an Admiral babysitting cadets at an academy and our other favorite trek characters split up. Kirk & Co. really belong on a ship and out in the great unknown TOGETHER. That is what made trek great. Our favorite characters interacting with EACH OTHER in times of crisis. I did appreciate the call backs in the story from episodes of TOS though. It gives the adventures some sense of continuity where the TV series had none. Performance from narrator is as good as always.

Not my favorite timeline.

A-plot long needed for Uhura. The B didn't work at-all. jim-jordan ending for it made-no-sense.

Strong Uhura story.
