Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Nice Book

I liked the book. Binge "read" it while I worked for a couple of hours a day and knocked it out in a week and a half. Overall it's a good book and not a bad narrator but personally it was hard to tell who was who sometimes because the narrator makes similar accents for several characters. This book was recorded over a decade ago so it's understandable but I think if they rerecorded all this and used more voice actors, male and female, it would be better. Some of the females sound like males and vice versa. Overall it's a good book.

hard to review an epic...

These books are LOOOONNNGGGG! They are detailed, and character rich, and at times tedious, but they are excellent, and they immerse the reader in another word, full of magic, sex, violence, fear, and hope. sometimes you've got to battle to keep going, truly, but you're always glad when you do. a great reader who brings life to the characters. .. well worth the effort, but it is an effort. ..

Book Review

George R.R. Martin is the best fantasy writer I’ve come across, thus far. He has really inspired me to write my children’s fantasy series. The way Martin tells the story and brings the characters to life is extraordinary. I feel as though I’ve lived twelve lives after reading this book.
It’s incredible how we can connect with each of these fictional characters and remember all their names because there were more than a lot of them!
A Clash of Kings continued the series well and was a great addition. It did have more swearing and sex than the first, but thankfully it wasn’t in every chapter. I also would’ve liked more chapters about Daenerys since it felt like we only got what felt like 3 in the 900+ pages!
That said, the rest of the book was fantastic. I’ve come to adore Arya and Jon! Bran’s story is also progressing with such mystery that I’m very intrigued to read what happens next. I’m also excited to see what will become of Sansa; I do feel sorry for her, no matter how much of a brat she can be.
This book was action-packed, thrilling, intriguing, and entertaining. You never knew where the story was going next and just when you thought there would be a happy ending, another character reminded you of the evil that was still lurking in the shadows just waiting to make its debut.
Now, all that's left for me to do is get the next book and start reading part three of The Song of Ice and Fire series!

Entertaining adult fantasy

Not for people who like everything to turn out nice and perfectly for the hero at the end.
