New York Times bestselling author Robert. K. Tanenbaum delivers his grittiest, most ethically challenging thriller yet, as New York chief assistant district attorney Butch Karp fights for his family in the wilds of West Virginia's coal mining country.
While New York City sizzles beneath a blanket of early summer humidity, the Karp family is happily taking refuge in their renovated farmhouse on Long Island's north shore. Karp's battles against the City's corrupt politicians are never-ending. His wife, Marlene, is training guard dogs on their picturesque acreage; Lucy is enjoying her summer brake from Boston College and playing the part of the dutiful daughter, assisting with the running of the business and tending to her two rambunctious twin brothers.
The tide quickly changes when Marlene befriends her beachside neighbor, Rose Wickham-Heeney, a northeastern aristocrat turned wife of West Virginia coal mine union leader Ralph "Red" Heeney. Soon after the fun-filled weeks of family barbecues and lazy afternoons with the Heeneys, the Karps discover that Rose, Red, and their daughter, Lizzie, have been brutally murdered back home in McCullensburg. Irresistible force meets immovable object when the West Virginia governor appoints Karp as special prosecutor to bring justice to the corrupt town, its union chieftain, and his band of merry tugs. Marlene joins Karp as he searches for the killers and works to save his own family from an evil that runs as deep as the mines that fuel it.©2002 Robert K. Tanenbaum; (P)2002 Simon & Schuster Inc. Love the stories of Marlene and Karp and their three children and their guard dog. Love to listen to their family banter it’s hilarious. I feel cheated with an abridged version of the book.

Hate abridged books

This is one of my favs! I have reread this book many times. This recording of it ruined the book. The story line is butchered, great parts of the story are left out, it is a terrible audio book. The story is completely ruined.

Butch Karp butchered!

The reader is excellent and delivers with a wry sense of humor. Tannebaum's excellent story, however, is hopelessly chopped to pieces. I kept listening out of a morbid sense of courosity to see if they were going to jump from the shotgunned brother and the girl locked in the coal mine to "And they lived happily ever after." If the author had actually used those words, they probably would have as well; otherwise the last third of the book is wrapped up in about ten minutes. Nevertheless, I gave it two stars because it is an excellent Tannenbaum story and what portions are included are read with style. Please do not reward Audible by purchasing this book.

Now I remember why I loathe abridgements

I will not waste my time. Robert Tannebaum writes good stories with plenty of humor as well as mystery. Abridging it gives you half a story.
