The enchanting first novel in the Katherine Kurtz's epic Deryni world. Masterfully read to bring the characters to life.

The Deryni books are a long time favorite of mine. As young Kelson takes the throne after his father's untimely death, unforeseen forces bar the way. Written in high fantasy style yet very approachable, this story begins a long series of excellent books. I was very happy to find it in audio format. The performance by Jeff Woodman is excellent, lending support to an already well-loved story.

Read these books when I was 17. Loved them then. Just Reread...still great! Worth it!

Reread just as good as first time

I enjoyed this book and had great expectations for the rest in the series. However, it started getting real religious, and while I did get through the 2nd and 3rd book I really lost interest in them and listed to them more as background noise. I bought, but will return the last book.

Pretty Good

I read this book as a teen, then picked it up again thirty years later when I found the used books sitting on a bookstore shelf, seemingly abandoned.

It's a great story, but it was more enjoyable for me when I was a kid and teens will likely enjoy it. I guess we change a bit in our tastes—who knew? Still, Kurtz earned her stripes and deserves credit for producing some classic storytelling at a time when YA was in its infancy.

I listened to the audiobook intermittently, switching back and forth between audio (when driving) and the paperback. Jeff Woodman does a great job with the pace and the character voices, and I highly recommend it.
