Publisher's summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

"Intelligent, complex, with a gripping plot and deeply intriguing characters. The author's early death is a great loss." (Philip Pullman)

"What a cracking novel! I haven't read such a stunning thriller debut for years. Brilliantly written and totally gripping." (Minette Walters)

Email To My Uncle Trying to Convert Him to Audio

I just listened to the audio book. What an experience! You have got to start using your i Pod to listen to books.

Reading this book versus listening to it would probably be like drinking soy milk instead of partaking of the real stuff.

It gets even worse when you try to condense 18 hours into a couple of hours. A couple of times I thought the book was ending at a climatic part and was saying "Wow what a book" to myself only to find out there were several more hours to listen too. My reaction was - there is nothing the author could decently add to this story - only to find out a few hours later there definitely was.

I don't know how a movie can do justice to the book. The comparison has got to get worse.

A movie would be like listening to Beethoven's ninth on a toy accordion instead of with a symphony orchestra.

A great listen

Excellent characters, strong plot, well written, and superbly narrated. A new twist on the who-dunit story.

The classic unputdownable

I discovered this book only because it was offered on low cost sale, and, although mystery/thriller is not my usual literary fare, became unashamedly hooked and couldnt wait to download the rest of the trilogy. I drive long distance trucks and actually looked forward going to work just so I could listen to this trilogy. Some reviewers have advocated a more thorough editing to cull the slower bits like which order they put on their clothes .... but these passages just drew me into their lives even more untill I felt part of them, surely the mark of successful characterisation. These books are a triumph. I am now experiencing serious withdrawl, and dare I say it, something akin to mourning that these people that I got to know so well will never live on the page again now that Mr larson has left us.
Download the trilogy, sit back and lose yourself ..... and Mr Larson wherever you are, take a bow,

What a wonderful find

This book had been recommended to me numerous times by both my Kindle device and Audible, so I took a chance and am happy to report that I've found another wonderful author. This book was fantastic - right up my alley.

Outstanding!

Would you listen to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo again? Why?

Story and narrator - both are captivating. Saul Reichlin was a great choice for this trilogy.

UNTURNOFFABLE!

Great yarn and superlative read. Make sure you get this one first, then The Girl who Played with Fire and then The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. What adds so much is that most 'crime' is situated in anglo saxon places but the Swedish element makes it so much richer and engaging. Makes sure you listen with care to the start of the book so as to get used to the character names.

End of Side 1 of Cassette 17

It is a bit long in the tooth in a few parts but it is a gripping and tense story. The narrator is excellent switching between characters. Can't wait to listen to the next story.

Fantastic Book

I loved this book! It started off slowly but the tension built slowly and steadily throughout. There were unsuspected plot twists and intrigue by the bucket-load. The Swedish names took a little getting used to but the narrator did a great job. I will be getting Steig Larsson's other books - I can't wait to read the next instalment.
