Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history. He turned to the first page and read:

I, Strahd, Lord of Barovia, well aware certain events of my reign have been desperately misunderstood by those who are better at garbling history than recording it, hereby set down an exact record of those events, that the truth may at last be known....

He caught his breath. By all the good gods, a personal journal?

Great read if your interested in vampires and D&D.
I have read this a few times. If your ever in a mood to play a Curse of Strahd module this is delightful.

Dungeon Masters must read

I would recommend this mostly to people who intend to DM Curse of Strahd for 5e. Players who might want to someday play a campaign of Curse of Strahd should steer clear, as the spoilers herein comprise all the twists and turns of that campaign without adding anything particular to them. But as a DM I can see how this can help to familiarize one with the setting and background. Unrelated to D&D this fantasy vampire novel is mediocre and cliche.

Pretty okay

Excellent for anyone trying to learn more about Barovia or Ravenloft as a setting. Strahd himself is presented as deep and complex, but his motivations were always brutally clear. The narrator was a little robotic/stiff and it sometimes felt as if he were generated via a soundboard. Otherwise, very good book, would advise others to read/listen if they had an interest in gothic fantasy or running a horrific game as a Dungeon Master.
