When attorneys Vernetta Henderson and Neddy McClain are tapped to take on the biggest case of their careers, they are less than thrilled about working together. Their strained relationship, however, is the least of their problems. Their socialite client - charged with the brutal murder of her husband - is demanding an immediate dismissal of the case. But a ruthless prosecutor is determined to make sure that doesn't happen. Forced to fight a common enemy, the two women close ranks and, in the process, develop a bond that sees them through the uncertainties of trial, the pain of betrayal and pressures neither could have imagined.

I tried this book after reading several middling reviews saying the narrator ruined it for them. I agree that a female narrator might be better and certainly with so few men in the book, a woman narrator might have had an easier time with all the characters but I was pleasantly surprised that within a few minutes I was adjusted to RC Bray's voice and was pleased with it as well. I had no problems telling the characters apart.
For me, a white person, getting a glimpse, through this book, of modern black life and dialogue is informative and illuminating. Professionals of all races have A type personalities and relationship problems. Looking forward to reading the next book.
My only negative is the loud music played periodically which actually takes away from the story and important dialogue.

Unexpectedly Excellent

The story is quite enjoyable. It doesn’t have too many characters and everyone is introduced in a clear manner. Like another reviewer mentioned, if you critically analyze every event, sure you’ll probably find plot holes. But, the characters are so alive & dimensional & the story progresses so nicely, I think a normal listener wouldn’t notice and/or wouldn’t care. I thought Bray was the perfect narrator. His Vernetta voice sounds like warm butter.

However, who put that crazy 1 minute of loud noise/ special effects toward the end??? I didn’t want or buy a booktrack edition. I’m hearing impaired and have trouble enough selecting good books I can actually follow without a concurrent print edition. Whoever is advising these authors to do this kindly stop! People who want that buy booktrack books. It lowered my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars because I’m missing part of the conclusion.

Very Enjoyable, Worth a Credit

This is about a female lawyer trying to juggle home and work life and not doing it very well. Its told with an African American bias which made the book more interesting a regular lawyer story and the crime and investigation were all interesting and should have made a great story. But I felt it was just lacking excitement and at times the story was predicated slow. However if you enjoy law stories and court room dramas then it is written well enough. Just a bit disappointing.

Average lawyer story

Any additional comments?

This book is an easy listen. Nothing too suspenseful or gripping. Character development was OK…with Special being the flamboyant, and thus memorable, character. There are better attorney suspense books out there.

Nothing to get excited about

What a good time I had reading this book! The story had many twists and turns in this legal murder mystery with cheating spouses and attorney insights.
