Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that retelling the story of what happened would resolve these effects.

However, survivors report a different experience: Telling and re-telling the story of what happened to them often reactivates their trauma responses, overwhelming them rather than resolving the trauma. To transform traumatic experiences, survivors need to understand their symptoms and reactions as normal responses to abnormal events. They need ways to work with the symptoms that intrude on their daily activities, preventing a life beyond trauma.

Dr. Janina Fisher, international expert on trauma, has spent over 40 years working with survivors, helping them to navigate the healing journey. In Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma, she shows how the legacy of symptoms helped them survive and offers:

  • Step-by-step strategies that can be used on their own or in collaboration with a therapist
  • Simple diagrams that make sense of the confusing feelings and physical reactions survivors experience
  • Worksheets to practice the skills that bring relief and ultimately healing

This book was recommended by my therapist and we worked through the book together. It's the only thing that has helped with my Complex PTSD that is due to childhood (and beyond) emotional abuse caused by a parent. I really felt seen and understood and it spoke to exactly how the abuse made me feel and it helped to undo the vast majority of the damage that was done to me and my mental health (Major Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder which were due to the Complex PTSD.) CONS: When the author addresses addictions, it was hard for me to relate to because I have a phone addiction whereas the author lists only addictions that I do not have, such as alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, and sex addiction.)

Helped immensely with my PTSD from childhood emotional

Appreciated the explanations and worksheets. Also the idea of being curious about who you were as a child and how you responded to your environment.

Insightful and helpful

Absolutely love Janina's work in trauma and the accompanying therapeutic modalities she employs and mentions in this book. I highly recommend giving this a listen to all mental health professionals, victims/survivors of trauma (abused and otherwise) and family members/caretakers of those who e experience a traumatic past. Camille's voice is soothing, easy to understand and inflects at the perfect moments.

So stunned by the information in this workbook and ‘Healing the fragmented Selves of trauma survivors’. It totally describes the effects of my childhood trauma and my progress towards healing. Somehow I got in touch with some of my parts. It is through asking how they feel and want that I know how I feel and want. Such interesting and transformative insight. The neuroscience knowledge behind this gave me even more confidence that this is a breakthrough to help the victims of childhood abuse. It’s truly a life saving breakthrough.

Stunned, profound, hopeful
