He was just trying to help a friend.

After three tours in Afghanistan, homeless and hooked on painkillers, Lenny was working to pull his life together. He gave Annie the last of his oxy pills to ease the pain from her shoulder injury. But when she was found dead in her tent the next morning, Lenny wound up in jail accused of killing her with fentanyl.

After a year behind bars, Lenny was finally about to get his day in court. But the uncertainty of the coronavirus threatened to delay his justice further. The evidence is compelling: a pill bottle with Lenny’s name, fingerprints, and DNA is found in the tent of the decedent, Annie Parker. There are six pills laced with fentanyl inside the bottle. Lenny insists he’s innocent. He claims he gave Annie three of his legitimate OxyContin pills that he got from the V.A.

When Lenny’s public defender is called away to help a family member sick with COVID, Mike Daley steps in to take over his case. Contrary to Mike’s advice, Lenny rejects a continuance leaving Mike little time to prepare for trial. With the City on the verge of closing down, Mike must fly solo at trial as he desperately searches for witnesses in the homeless encampments and the drug-infested hotels in the Tenderloin.

An intricate plot, engaging characters, powerful suspense, and a touch of humor are Sheldon Siegel’s hallmarks. In Double Jeopardy, the 14th installment of his New York Times best-selling series, listeners will discover once again why Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez are two of the most compelling characters in contemporary crime fiction.

Fentanyl is a hazard to everyone. As a nurse, I gave it via a computerized injection machine and double checked by another nurse. It was rarely used. This story combined the epidemic of drug use, homelessness and the pandemic in a way that showed the true nature of all 3.

Great story of timely issues

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy this Siegel series, to a point. From about book 6 onward each new book is a lot of regurgitation of things from every prior book in the series. You may get tired of hearing the same back story over and over. There will be a murder client who Mike Daley will represent in front of the same judge; against the same prosecutor/detective/medical examiner; his brother Pete will be the PI; the client will insist on waving time so there will be a short time frame to prove reasonable doubt, someone else did it or get the charges dropped. Spoiler alert: Mike and his cast of familiar characters always pull a rabbit out of the hat, although the rabbit sometimes loses an ear or a foot. Siegel will tell you that Perry Mason like endings don't happen in real life, then he gives you a Perry Mason like ending.

You've heard much of this before.

Its so nice to see...err rather hear all the familiar voices again since Mr. Campbell repeats his stellar voice acting.
As far as the plot of the book, it wasnt as SHAZAAM as the other books in Mr. Siegel's series. I felt the focus on the current health events, while bringing real life into the plot, distracted from the courtroom crime story I most enjoy.
This just felt like a short story with a grip of filler, so good but not my favorite.
