I was just a boy when the monsters rose on earth, forcing humans to flee to the coastlines and live in cramped, dirty, military-controlled cities. I enlisted as soon as I could to escape.

Now, I’ve been in the military for twelve years and have the scars—and missing body parts—to prove it. As a hardened soldier who’s spent his fair share of time out in the Wastes—the dangerous place where monsters roam free—I didn’t think anything could surprise me anymore.

But then circumstance forced me together with a big, annoying purple monster who’s arrogant and bossy and pushes all my buttons in the worst—and best—ways. I need his help, and I hate needing anyone’s help. But the more time I spend with him, the more I realise that maybe there’s more from him that I need... and that he might need things from me too.

But I’m still a soldier. I still have responsibilities. It doesn’t matter how I feel about Edin, because we can’t be together. It’s too dangerous. That doesn’t stop me wanting him, though.

Edin is book two of the Monstrous series, a post-apocalyptic m/m fantasy series that focuses on monsters and human men falling in love. The story contains explicit content, including graphic depictions of torture and violence, and mentions PTSD.

Mayne has done it again! Following the initial book ‘Soul Eater’ with another incredibly vivid story. ‘Edin’ tells the story of monsters, the wastes, and love, from a soldier’s perspective. The writing is so incredibly detailed, wrapping you in words that make you feel the story as you are reading. This couple are completely different from Wyn and Danny. Edin is a huge happy-go-lucky, always smiling and touchy-feely, gregarious monster roaming the wastes after escaping the horrors of the military’s specimen program. Hunter is a closed-off, kind of cantankerous, tall, built soldier who roams the wastes scouting for the military with his buddy Charlie. When Charlie gets kidnapped by monsters Edin decides to help Hunter and won’t take no for an answer. An epic journey ensues. They meet up with Edin’s long-long-long time friend Wyn and his partner Danny. Rescue attempts, battles, seriously s3xy romantic times, edge of your seat attacks, and gorgeous views of what a peaceful life away from the military could be like all happen along the way. This brilliant story is brought to life by excellent narration by Michael Leslie. Danny (sweet with a Louisiana twang) and Wyn (deep, creepy/scary, otherworldly, and also super s3xy) keep their voices from the previous book. Hunter and Edin are distinctly unique. Leslie brings Edin’s smiling face to mind when he voices the dialogue, which is pretty amazing! And his laugh- so perfect for a gigantic, warm, lovable gregarious Edin! I love audiobooks that you can start anywhere in a story and instantly know who is talking just by their voice! Fantastic narration.

Fantastic post apocalyptic world!

This is my favorite couple of the entire series. I kind of imagine Edin like Hellboy, which make me like the story even more. The only that makes me sad, its the same problem that Charlie and Wyn have. The humans will die, and Edin and Wyn would be all alone. Specially saddens me with Edin. Hope the author finds a loophole in her own story and they can stay forever together.

My only issue with the story, it’s something that is prevalent in the entire series. And that’s the biology.

OK I am FULLY on board with this series. I just tore through this book in a day and a half and I loved every second of it.

This author is absolutely divine, her world building skills are top-notch, the characters are relatable and empathetic and I have zero complaints. An easy five stars.

I was already 12 chapters into book 3 before I even thought about the fact that I might need to head to Goodreads/Storygraph to acknowledge that I had actually finished book 2.

Another shout out to Michael Lesley. He is absolutely perfect narrating this series. I can’t imagine anyone else doing these characters justice.

I’m usually a read three books at a time kind of gal and I am all in with this series. I haven’t looked at another series or picked up another book since I started Soul Eater earlier this week. I haven’t had that kind of book monogamy in months. I’m already anticipating one hell of a book hangover when I finish and don’t get me started on how poorly I’ll handle waiting for the next in the series to be published.

Big purple, horned, fang toothed sweetheart beastie saves rude, callous, thoughtless, military scared human. Edin’s kindness breaks through Charles gruff exterior during there long dangerous journey to save Charlie. After many monster attacks, fight rings and mental barriers they connect.
