Publisher's summary

The apocalypse is coming, but only a lucky—or perhaps unlucky—few know.

Silas is inducted into the System, becoming the last in a long line of Earth's "forerunners." The rewards are great, but the danger is greater. We are not alone in the universe. The fate of five worlds hangs on how their forerunners perform.

Will Silas have what it takes to win Earth a place in the multiverse? Or will Earth become another mining world stripped of all resources and left a barren husk floating in the cosmos?

A system-enforced secret, a deadly challenge, and only a year to go. The countdown begins now!

Well done!!!

It's not the best thing I've ever read, but I don't have anything to complain about ...that is actually waaaaaay more impressive than anything else I could say. Unfortunately a lot of my reviews, even generally positive ones feature one or 2 major complaints. This book though, start to finish nothing broke my immersion. I was truly caught up in the story, just enjoying listening to one of my favorite narrators do his thing.

Again, I don't think the author reinvented the wheel or anything. There is some novelty in how the MC gets sucked into the system and magic, but at it's core the subject matter is pretty familiar. The difference lays in the execution. This was a really polished piece of writing.

Sean Oswald is a talented dude. I've actually already been following this guy without realizing it. I've enjoyed a couple of his other books as well, but I hadn't paid attention to who the author was. With this book tho ...now he's one of those authors that I will follow in earnest. Consider me a fan.

Worth the credit!!!

An MC that grows on you as he grows

Oswald has always been big hits or big misses for me as a reader/listener. I've loved two or three of his series and not bedn able to get into just as many other of his series. So starting a new one of his with such a trope and genre classic heavy summary definitely had me wary.
Luckily this one ended up being a pretty decent hit for me.
The generic seeming MC isn't the most interesting early on, but the reactions and growth he as is believable enough and every chapter that seems uninteresting at face value ends up being something that by the end of the chapter or at least soon after you can point and go "Oh! that was a growth moment! I like it now!"
And until you reach the point with the MC where he has grown enough that you are invested in him you have had half of a book of super solid world building and a decently intriguing mystery to keep you invested.
This started out as a usage of an extra credit while I needed something for background while I lesson planned and waited for some pre-orders to come out and ended with me being very excited for the next book!

nice reference to dungeon crawler carl

pretty good book doesn't need to apologize for giving stats, that's why we read litrpg books. I give it a c+ as the book is still trying to find its position in the genre.

Unique.

The story and abilities were unique. I liked the start but how he stepped up to the challenge made it nice.

Exactly what I was looking for

Went from tarots 9th harbinger to this, and it was the perfect book to read after finishing that book.
I enjoy the characters and magic used, I think this is the beginning of a solid series. Can’t wait for more !

I'll update when done but...(updated)

the trowel reference to HWFWM and the crawler carl references. Where great and well timed. I really enjoy when. an author throws nods at what will become all time classics on the genre. I finished it. Was a pretty solid entry into the genre. MC got annoying at times but that's pretty par for the course, all good though.

I love lit rpg books

I didn't think you could improve upon Sci Fi but this genre is the best combination of game and story.

Fun read

I very much enjoyed how the main character was in able to transition between the system controlled worlds and his real life back on Earth. The story had a good pace, interesting characters and a fun plot line. if you're looking for a good Isakai, this is the book for you.
