A deviously twisty novel of psychological suspense about secrets, neighbors, a need to belong, and murder by the award-winning author of The Maid’s Diary.

Socially awkward Chloe Cooper divides her time between dog walking, bartending, caring for her ailing mother, and at a safe distance, watching people and inventing the stories of their lives. Like Chloe’s new neighbors: glamorous influencer Jemma Spengler and Jemma’s husband, Adam, a renowned surgeon. They’re attractive, wealthy, and in a house of open windows, so exposed.

A move to the Pacific Northwest is supposed to be a fresh start for Jemma and Adam. It’s a renewed commitment to a marriage fractured by secrets. A chance to work through the tragic losses in their past. For Jemma, however, this new beginning also comes with an unnerving sensation that she’s being watched.

Then, on a fog-shrouded beach early in the morning, Chloe witnesses the murder of a swimmer. Her suspicions aroused, she suddenly sees her neighbors in a sinister new light. But as a detective and her partner close in, nothing is quite as it seems. Because the Spenglers are not the only ones with secrets. And Chloe isn’t the only one who’s been watching.

This book started out great. Many different interesting characters made for a fast paced read. Then we find out not everything is as we thought. Quickly the main character morphed into someone I couldn't stomach. I really don't like when a good thriller ends up so sappy sweet. It's supposed to be a thriller not a feel good story!

Couldn't Stand the Main Character

Love this author! Her books are captivating and ‘unputdownable’! This one did not disappoint. Chloe is a single, solitary, almost 40yo woman who is taking her of her dying mother. She spends her time in her apartment looking through her mother’s birding binocular at the new neighbors. She admires the elegant woman, who swims daily. When Chloe witnesses a horrific murder, she assumes that the husband has killed the wife…after all, she overheard him and his mistress…but there is so much more going on. This book will hold you in its grasp until the very end. No spoilers, except to say that everyone gets their just desserts…definitely worth the read/listen!

Another outstanding book!

One of my besties of 2024.

From start to finish, I could not remove my headphones.

Loreth Anne White is brilliant.

Well-orchestrated twisty plot with strong characterizations.

Refreshingly different and impossible to predict.

Lost track of the book's GOL (Gasp Out Loud) moments.

The narration was superb.

Brilliant!

When I’m feeling sick, a good thriller fits the bill perfectly. The characters are good, but not so exquisitely drawn that I get too attached to them. The plot is quick and I can pay attention with about 70% of my brain and still feel like I’m reading a good book. This book hits all those points and extra cool that it takes place in Canada. Don’t be misled by my rating, this was a perfectly decent book, and a three out of five book was pretty much what I was looking for.

Perfect thriller to blast through

I am a big fan of this author. She did not disappoint. I enjoyed the way the story flowed easily, pop up twist, and revenge is not good. crazy characters! Not one of them worth a hoot.
