Malachi Vize has always had one desire in life. One goal. One deep obsession he could never give up on. His foster sister Olivia. For the first time, she’s chosen him over the entire world, and he intends to keep her in his firm grasp forever – but his happiness is soon shattered by powerful enemies who want to claim Olivia for themselves. He had her. But then he lost her. Wounded and still wrestling with his own demons, Malachi is forced into unexpected alliances to hunt them down, but he won’t stop fighting until he gets her back. No matter what it takes. This story comes with extremely triggering content. Please read the "Content Warning" page.

If you can get past the fact that they are ADOPTED siblings, not related in any way, shape, or form, the author did a phenomenal job at capturing what that “taboo” feeling was for Malachi and Olivia falling for each other. Because of it being a dark romance theme, that’s exactly what you’re going to get. Dark. Romance. You will be clutching your pearls. You will be sitting there in awe about how a human being can possibly think such things, the way Malachi thinks. You will be questioning what you like in bed, A LOT. Maybe even take notes.
While most of the book takes you through what Olivia was experiencing, it was a delight to also see it from Malachi’s point of view every now and again. The humor in it is great, the story telling of how everything played out, with Malachi’s plans and Olivia’s realization that the person she grew up with is more than a brother to her, is out of this world. The ending made me cry, and while i’ve now re-listened to some chapters after finishing, the narrator for Malachi really captured the psychotic, twisted thoughts that may have been hard to interpret if you read the physical copy, very well. While Olivia does get some hate from other readers with how she is in this book, it’s your typical “good girl/bad boy” troupe. Just on cocaine.
While I did rate the story a 4/5 stars, I’d give it a 4.8 if I could. The only reason for that being, the storyline felt a little rushed in the beginning and then was dragged on before the second part of the book started. I also wish we could’ve gotten a little more into Olivia’s background, as it’s lightly mentioned in this book, but overall, that’s my only complaint.
If this is your first introduction to dark romance, it may not be the book for you. I’d suggest really taking into consideration just the content warnings page alone. It covers a lot of stuff, and the author didn’t hold back on everything mentioned on that warnings page.
Overall: For something that I haven’t seen in recent dark romance books, Leigh Rivers does a great job at capturing the reader in and reminding them what “taboo dark romance” REALLY means. I love that she took a different approach to the “Good Girl/Bad Boy” Trope, while also slipping in characters saying exactly what outsiders are thinking and saying. It’s graphic, it’s very NSFW, and you will be sitting down afterwards still trying to process what happened. And I love it.
