Publisher's summary

When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm.

His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real.

Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Destiny is calling. His grandfather's legacy awaits.

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime with USA Today best-selling author J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert in this galactic quest for glory.

Backyard Starship

Backyard Starship tells the story of a guy who finds a spaceship in his grandpa's barn. A simple premise that proves to be anything but.

It's a story you probably think you already know, but it's far more interesting than that. The initial premise is just to lure you in, but the longer story is full of worldbuilding and awesome characters. If you ever saw the Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers shows, this is a lot like that, with a hero you love to read or watch exploring and witnessing stuff you could only ever dream of. It is pure wish fulfillment, but it is done well.

Give it a shot and see what you think. It is well worth the credit.

More please

I have read nearly everything J.N Chaney and Terry Maggert have written but “Backyard Spaceship” is, in my opinion, their best collaboration yet.

better than expected

the storyline was absolutely awesome with a few little nods to other sci-fi here and there is Easter eggs or maybe just inspirations I really appreciate the level of skill in writing and the performance was clear and precise

A Bit Mundane

Instead of writing my own review, see the review titled "A Mishmash of Intergalactic Mehhh". His summary is pretty much spot on.

Granted, the whole space cop thing is not really my genre but even if it was, there isn't anything that stands out as a good story. Its a lot like drinking a flat soda.

I struggled through to chapter 27 before I broke down and returned the book.

Would make a fun Space RPG

This is aa fun light space adventure that scratches a lot of my adolescent space adventure itches I've never grown out of. Fun personalities, especially the AI. This would be a good set up for a fun space RPG that I would play.

Like a space role playing game, but lacks detail.

Could be better. Good setting, neat system, shallow characters, lacks details. Will read next.

This was a fun surprise

This book follows the usual young guy finds a spaceship and does battle with the bad guys. Still, I found it very entertaining. More interestingly, Jeffrey Kafer performed a very good narration. I listened to Kafer in his early years and frankly, could not stand him. I have avoided books he has narrated for that reason. I took a chance on this one. I have to say that he has matured as a narrator and has managed to move out of his early annoying monotone to actually voice characters. Good job Mr. Kafer.

IMHO, meh

The narration was pretty good but I didn't connect with this story. I might have sabotaged my experience with this book by having just finished a different book, which was great. I might have needed to cleanse my palette with something more simple in order to enjoy this modern 'Buck Rogers' style adventure. It just didn't click with me. But if you like Star Wars spin off books or Ufo-lands-in-the-countryside' books, this might just be your thing! Just don't read anything really good just before it.
