Story
For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds. This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

Story
One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern edge of Russia, two girls - sisters, eight and 11 - go missing. In the ensuing weeks, then months, the police investigation turns up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women. Taking us through a year in Kamchatka, Disappearing Earth enters with astonishing emotional acuity the worlds of a cast of richly drawn characters, all connected by the crime: a witness, a neighbor, a detective, a mother.

To his three ex-wives, he was a loving albeit distant family man who kept his finances flush and his families carefully separated. To Nora, he was a father who often loved her from afar—notably a cliffside cottage perched on the California coast from which he fell to his death.

Publisher's summary
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the celebrated author of Disappearing Earth comes a tale of family, obsession, and a mysterious creature in the woods—“a mesmerizing story about hope, sisterhood, and survival with a truly shocking twist at the end” (People, Book of the Week).
A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BUZZ PICK!
One of the Most Anticipated Books of the Summer: The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, People, Vulture, Elle, Bustle, LitHub, Parade, Publishers Weekly, Electric Lit, WBEZ Chicago
“Thrilling and propulsive, glorious and terrifying. Julia Phillips is a brilliant writer.”—Ann Patchett
“Beautiful and haunting . . . this is brilliant.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
They were sisters and they would last past the end of time.
Sam and Elena dream of another life. On the island off the coast of Washington where they were born and raised, they and their mother struggle to survive. Sam works on the ferry that delivers wealthy mainlanders to their vacation homes while Elena bartends at the local golf club, but even together they can’t earn enough to get by, stirring their frustration about the limits that shape their existence.
Then one night on the boat, Sam spots a bear swimming the dark waters of the channel. Where is it going? What does it want? When the bear turns up by their home, Sam, terrified, is more convinced than ever that it’s time to leave the island. But Elena responds differently to the massive beast. Enchanted by its presence, she throws into doubt the desire to escape and puts their long-held dream in danger.
A story about the bonds of sisterhood and the mysteries of the animals that live among us—and within us—Bear is a propulsive, mythical, richly imagined novel from one of the most acclaimed young writers in America.
Critic reviews
“A bold and brilliant modern fable of sisterhood, class, and our relationship to the natural world.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Story
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage.

This spellbinding novel by bestselling author Ann Napolitano is a poignant reminder of how connected we are to those we love, even when we cannot find the words to say it. The unforgettable story of three generations of an Irish American family, Within Arm’s Reach is another rich and deeply satisfying novel from the author who captured the many dimensions of grief in Dear Edward and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood in Hello Beautiful.

Wow. LOVED this book.
5 stars for Bear by Julia Phillips. This book will be in my Best Books of 2024 without a doubt. It's a story about two sisters (Elena and Sam) living on San Juan Island (Washington State) trying to survive the financial hardships of a post pandemic world while taking care of their mother who is sick and dying. The daily drudgery of working in concessions on a ferry and taking their mother to the mainland for doctor's appointments and disappointing news are told primarily from the perspective of Sam, the younger sister, who is desperately attached to her older sister and dreams of the two of them moving off the island and starting a new life. And then they encounter a bear. And the sisters radically different reception to this encounter changes everything between them and sets them on a course that neither are able to avert. So much of this book is really a look at the Haves and the Have Nots and the gross disparity of how much more brutal the pandemic was for those who were just barely getting by as it was. As someone who lives in Washington State and has spent a lot of time on San Juan Island I can say that the observations on the culture of the Island are 110% accurate. There is a chasm between the tourists and the wealthy transplants and the people who were born and raised there and struggle with seasonal work just to get by. Phillips insight was so authentic I thought she must have lived there, but she didn't. She just did her research and had a strong desire to portray the reality of living in paradise with honesty and care. Additionally, I found the relationship between the sisters to be one of the most disturbingly genuine portrayals I've ever read. So often I read sister stories and I think - that is so not how sisters behave. I have 3. I ought to know. The tortuous ties between sisters can be equally life saving and lethal. Phillips really nailed it. As an older sister myself, I felt both empathy and annoyance at Sam's attachment to Elena. And when the Bear enters the story and Elena is lifted momentarily from the weight of her responsibilities to her mother and little sister, you can't help but feel her joy. I encourage readers to go into this one without reading too much about it as I fear some reviews may inadvertently spoil the journey. I don't know if this book will be for everyone. It is most definitely a character driven novel without a huge plot, but there are events that happen and contribute to the compulsion to keep reading to the very end. I have thought about this book non stop since reading it. I hope my review is befitting of this beautiful story.

I couldn’t wait for this to get over
I really liked Phillips’ Disappearing Earth, but I was very disappointed by this one. It might have made a good short story or even a novella, but in this form, it was just boring. If I could have, I would have returned it. The characters were shallowly drawn and not very likable and I there was too much mundane detail that did not move the story or develop the characters.

Depressing
I was so excited about this book and pre-ordered. Unfortunately, the story dragged on and on, was incredibly repetitive, and wasn’t hopeful as some reviewers stated.
