About this listen

The Expeditionary Force saga continues with Breakaway, the eagerly awaited sequel to number-one Audible-ranked and New York Times best-selling Brushfire, from an epic sci-fi writer at the top of his game. Join the millions of listeners who have enjoyed R.C. Bray’s hilarious portrayal of Joe, Skippy, The Merry Band of Pirates, and so many other unforgettable characters.

The Merry Band of Pirates offered the bad guys a ceasefire. We won’t mess with them, if they don’t mess with us. Easy, right?

No.

The aliens chose to do things the hard way. So, the Pirates are racing around the galaxy to clean up the threat to Earth. The infant UN Navy has their own mission with the Alien Legion: Get humanity some allies in the fight. And the Ethics & Compliance Office might have to do something...ethical. Unless they can find a way around it.

Awesomeness abounds

Spoilers for the other books and possibly this one.

Another fire book in this series. Craig really moved things along in this book and skipped over alot of "blah blah blah" explanations for the most part or really shortened them. Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed all of the explanations in the other books but the amount of stuff covered didn't leave much room for it which I appreciated. I've really enjoyed how Joe and Skippy's relationship has progressed to the point that they no longer banter as much as they used to and have much more patient with each other. It seems to me that they do flick crap at each other because they're friends, it's fun, nostalgic and there's enough heavy stuff going on they gotta keep some humor around. Skippy also says he does it to keep Joe humble and stuff which was probably to make Simms (and maybe some of the audience) feel better about Skippy being an a-hole to Joe which probably had a nugget of truth to it. They've gotten along progressively better and have both come a long way from when they first met on Paradise. The only tiny complaint I've got was Joe breaking the fourth wall with the "you: me:" question time stuff which got on my nerves because it took forever and made me want to screech "get on with it" to hear the next bit. It was kind of humorous because I'm sure there's alot of super nerdy, picky fans that section applied to of which I am not one. Also saw alot of reviews that said this book was mostly filler and Craig is just trying to milk it out. I don't know where people got that notion because if that were the case I feel as if each and every little battle or encounter that was quickly summarized would have taken way longer and been much more detailed and drawn out. He wrote the pertinent information with a nice explanation and moved on to the next big thing going on in the galaxy. A ton happened in this book that really fills the gaps in what would otherwise made no sense if it weren't explained. The elders, the bad AIs and the possible threat from outside the galaxy weren't mentioned much but it also wouldn't make much sense to be relevant right now. The two senior species definitely would not give a rats a-- about something that schmaybe could threaten them in the near or distant future. They've been fighting a ceaseless war for thousands of years and are only worried that they'll lose some of their power and footholds in the galaxy because of humans. They'd probably just get all excited that there are other elder AI out there and start digging around the galaxy for them at the expense of anyone who got in their way. They are only concerned about the massive human threat to them and their power that they've held for millennia. Anyways that's the end of my little rant. Craig Alanson's a hilarious creative, wordsmithing powerhouse and RC Bray is an effin' extraordinarily gifted narrator that brings these characters to life.

TLDR: Dope a-- book, sick AF narration, thoroughly enjoyed.

finally!

Finally. the author is finally finding the right pacing for this series. the time for hanging cliffs should have been done before this one. no 200 pages overly detailed ops. there is too much going on to macro into that anymore. the humor was amazing and felt fresh. finally giving us frequent perspective of other species. this is the best book yet.

too much techno babble...

this is the first time I started fast forwarding through the techno babble. I wanted more story, strategy, character development than I got in this latest installment. there seemed to be a bit of vanity in the story when it came to what the author thought would be audience questions for Joe Bishop. I could have done without the whole you/me thing and found that very annoying.

Kept me guessing what's going to happen next

I'm really loving the second half of this series. The last book delved into several important relationships, while not distracting from the overall forward movement of the story. The relationship building continues here while also going 3x on the action and raising the stakes. It's no longer just one problem at a time for the humans, but many to solve all at once, which keeps the listener guessing on how it all could possibly be resolved...and I love it.

love the series

It has its corny moments but honestly it's a Syfy book, so what do you expect? I love the interactions between characters and Skippy. I can't wait for the next one and I'm hoping he has a couple more after that with some more entertaining actions throughout the story. there's a lot Craig could expand upon with his novel here.
