Publisher's summary

On planet Earth, it's aliens against humans and humans are losing the battle.

While a few brave humans are ready to fight to regain their freedom from their alien conquerors, the future of the human race falls on Khara, a woman whose sole focus is her personal fight for survival amidst abuse from her alien master. Despite her reluctance to become involved in the rebellion, she is thrown into its very center when she rescues a fellow slave from death at the hands of his alien master.

As the human population dwindles toward extinction and the rebellion hurtles toward the final hopeless battle, will a strange and reluctant pact between Khara and an alien lead to the possibility of survival? Or will the human race finally be eliminated once and for all?

Reminiscent of Blade Runner, this thrilling and fast-paced sci-noir story is told from both human and alien points of view, a la C.J. Cherryh, and puts a new twist on the idea of “first contact”.

Not for me

I gave it 1.5 hours of audio time and I can’t seem to care about any of the characters. I want to try to stick with it but after two days of trying I just can’t.
I feel like there is supposed to be some sensual or sexual aspect of this story but that too was lost on me.
I listen to an average of 100 books a year. I don’t give up easily. I may try to finish it at another time.
Narration was good.

A Disappointing Alien Invasion Story

This book had so much potential in a genre that I typically always enjoy, but despite the excellent premise, I was surprisingly disappointed. It starts off ok … bugs have invaded and conquered earth and somewhere out there are scrappy rebels destined to take it back. That was as good as it got. Written entirely in first person present tense, there was a significant amount of passive, descriptive voice that just dragged on and on (making it exceptionally boring for most of it). Additionally, there was way too much anthropomorphizing of the alien bugs (and frankly a lot of rather gross interactions with the palpus) that just doesn’t work with the image in my head. All of this was exacerbated by a flat narration with now distinction between characters (which was especially problematic for interactions with the bugs). In fact, this was very nearly a DNF, but I already had book two in the queue, so I gutted through it.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
