Publisher's summary

A race against time becomes a battle for the soul in this suspenseful story from New York Times best seller Jeffery Deaver.

Death is a topic Bradford Douglas is intimately familiar with. The young attorney is on a crusade against capital punishment. He’s saved a number of death row inmates, but none of his cases has been as tough as the one he now faces: Henry Combs, a vicious serial killer, has only hours to live when Douglas is summoned for a Hail Mary attempt to have the man’s sentence commuted to life imprisonment.

As Douglas races to pursue whatever strategies he can think of, he finds his passion for justice giving way to something altogether different.

An obsession.

Not my style

More of a horror story than a mystery. I did not like it at all

Interesting concept but makes no sense

Okay, stop reading this if you haven’t read the book yet, because I can’t write this review without spoilers. One of the important rules of writing is: hiding the gun. That means you have to show your audience little hints of what is to come. You can’t just turn a person who dedicates his life to preventing the death penalty into a serial killer without any premise. You need to show how his mind is changed, how he slips into that darkness. In all honesty the ending of this book is total BS. The author wanted to do something unexpected, but even the unexpected needs to fit the story. I felt utterly cheated by the abrupt turn around. The writing was okay, not brilliant, and the characters were a little weak. Not great but the concept gives it an extra star from me (it would have been 2 stars otherwise)

I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT!

I just want to take the time to confirm that all of my theories excepting one were right and the one that wasn’t was due to a technicality.

Review required to finish listening

Had to give a half rate as I’d only half finished the book before falling asleep for the night. Narrator read on like a champ and finished the book apparently. Now in order to finish listening it seems Audible demands this review. Love Deaver’s writing but to be fair, I’m only halfway in.

Hoped the ending would be different than expected

This was a well performed short story about a lawyer who champions against the death penalty and the serial killer he's trying to save. The twist at the end was expected but didn't make sense.

Creepy story and subject

This is a prime example that the human psyche can become twisted. Some folks have such strong convictions for topics that others are just as strongly against

Ok

I am happy that the story finally finished with a bang, of sorts. Good...
