About this listen

The countdown to Nemesis 3 has begun, pushing humanity closer to the brink of extinction.

James and his team are now Earth's last line of defense amidst the chaos of New York City. But with each Nemesis wave they defeat and each power James unveils, a grim truth unfolds: they're being manipulated.

The enemy not only predicts their actions, it feeds on them. Their struggle may be nothing more than a sinister game or a prelude to annihilation.

To stand a chance, they must rewrite the rules. In the dwindling light of hope, James embraces his role as a leader. Tough decisions, impossible sacrifices, and the weight of the world on his shoulders—he'll face it all.

Anything to break the system.

Good story but . . .

The cliffhanger at the end of the story did not really grab me. I really feel like this story should have gone on for a couple more chapters before the conclusion. The end of the first book had me rearing for more, but this one not so much. F-bomb alert. I think I gave this alert in the first book also, but really, the author does not need so much swearing. It does nothing for the story but lowers the quality, in my opinion.

All this authors books are just so fun

I got into this author from his book bastion which that series is phenomenal so I thought I’d give this one a try and it’s been very fun. Looking forward to the next book.

Wow! Give me more please

What an amazing series. This one picked up exactly where the last left off and is leading to one heck of a finale in book 3. The book is lighter than a feather on religious aspects and does no more than name some of the skills required to kill the demon/monsters with a subtle undertone, like smite. If that ruffles ones feathers, I suggest looking within.

And With The Best Fight Scene Ever

A great sequel to the previous book, and as most Royal Road adaptations, has a negligible break in the story. Everything that was great about the first one continues to be great. We really feel the brutal grind of the war as we loose several characters to inner conflict and human error, and I felt the tension and hopelessness that drove them to seek a way to break free of the system's predetermined path of slaughter. Overall, a true masterpiece.

Now, before I go, I have two comments to make about the final climax of this book, one good, one bad. Don't worry. I won't get into spoilers.

First off, when seeking the Light, our characters get some predicable demonic interference. And I must say, that final boss fight was quite possibly the single BEST fight scene I have ever read. Going into it, I fully understood all of the powers and skillsets of our main characters, knew how many Heavenly Assaults they could use, how many Ava Tiernum they had saved up, how many Martyr's Crys they could rely on. And with the beautiful action prose that made sure we knew how each stat was affecting the main character's attacks and defenses, the entire scene was full of tension, hype, and pure awesomeness. At no point did I see a speck of plot armor, and the demon felt like a real, imminent threat throughout the whole fight. It was amazing, and I love Tucker for being able to pull it off.

Secondly, the Reservoir Cubes. They serve as a quite serious power escalation in the cliffhanger ending of the book, and I'm not sure I can approve of what they do. In many ways, they seem to trivialize all the effort up to this point by sidestepping a great many hurdles and challenges. In world, I do believe they are necessary to fight the demons on an even footing, but that's more of an issue with the demon's power levels than anything else. I'll reserve judgment until I see how they manage to keep up the stakes in book three, but I'm not optimistic.

Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Everything up to and including the climax is wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only down side is that book three may not be as good, but, well. That's book three, not book two, so definitely read this one.

New trusted Narrator

I have a hard time keeping up with what a few of the different characters' abilities are from one another, and a few others really stand out, but each character at least feels unique. I think a big part of this is because of the excellent narration. If you can tell who's talking before the writing does, that's huge to the immersion of the story.

Speaking of the story, I'll have times in other books where I get frustrated with the choices the author makes or the choices the author has their characters make. I'm not getting that here, which is refreshing. And instead of stupid choices, there's hard ones or choices seeped in uncertainty. There's still a lot of uncertainty by the end of book 2, but I feel like we're being led to answers before the series ends. I'm hoping I'm not wrong. Not a fan when a story says "Well that's the way it is, I can't explain it, so you'll just have to trust me."

Overall, the great narration and seemingly thought-out story make this one of my favorites. Would recommend.
