Publisher's summary

Lethal operative Scot Harvath is dispatched to avenge the killing of American citizens abroad in #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Brad Thor’s new pulse-pounding thriller.

In the war-ravaged borderlands of Ukraine, a Russian mercenary unit has gone rogue. Its members, conscripted from the worst prisons and mental asylums across Russia, are the most criminally violent, psychologically dangerous combatants to ever set foot upon the modern battlefield.

With all attention focused on the frontlines, they have pushed deeper into the interior to wage a campaign of unspeakable barbarity. As they move from village to village, committing horrific war crimes, they meet little resistance as all able-bodied men are off fighting the war.

Simultaneously, a team of Russian soldiers has been dispatched by the Kremlin to loot truckloads of art and priceless cultural treasures hidden away in a host of churches, museums, and private homes.

When multiple American aid workers are killed, America’s top spy, Scot Harvath, is sent in to settle the score. But in a country so vast, will Harvath be able to find the men in question and, more importantly, will he be able to stop them before they can kill again?

A rare miss for Thor.

I only picked up my first Thor novel a few years ago, but I’ve since burned through everything he’s written, even languishing through the Guidall narrations, because the stories were that good.

This time out, I can’t help but say it’s a miss. I understand that the book is written before it read and things change rapidly in modern conflict, but the broad message that any critical viewpoint on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict must be the work of Russian provocateurs is as bold as it is misguided, and uncharacteristically off balance for Thor.

I usually read each of Thor’s new novels two or three times, but I could barely finish this one.

Grand slam Mr. Thor!

Brad Thor crushed this one! Absolutely riveting Scot Harvath thriller! Sensational story line and plot. So much action that it will give any adrenaline junky a hangover!

Good but….

Not really a thriller or a ton of action compared to past books in this series.

Not his best

Love previous books but this was a bit lackluster for me. Narration good as always, the story left a little bit to be desired.

Dependable reboot

Everyone loves a hero and Scott is the best. A great series- however totally unrealistic no way one person can do what was portrayed in the story. Unfortunately it turned SH into a comic book character. While it was great to see all the bad guys die the real problem was at the top of the food chain- a target more suitable for SH to take on. Putting an older warrior back at the unit level doesn’t work

Seems like 1/2 a book.

Overall it’s not bad. A few chapters talking about the Paulson family and there wishes for lobbying that ultimately did nothing in the story. Seemed like it needed another twist or problem to solve. Just a little short. That being said, still worth a listen.

Not so great

Jumped around a lot and more often than not i was saying “ wait, what? “
I listen to the older books from time to time but this won’t be one of them.

Predictable

Brad Thor is on my top 3 favorite authors and I have read or listened to every single book of his.

However this one just wasn’t as good as many others. It seemed to jump around between too many story lines. I didn’t feel like all the side stories were completely necessary as it took away from the main line story.

Hopefully the next book is better.

Meh…

I have read the entire series from the first book on. There’s a visible decay in the quality of Thor’s plots, and the side stories are becoming sloppier with each new book.
