Don’t miss the eagerly anticipated epic new fantasy from Christopher Paolini—Murtagh, coming 11.7.23!

A new adventure hatches in Book One of the Inheritance Cycle, perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings! This New York Times bestselling series has sold over 40 million copies and is an international fantasy sensation.

"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity."—The Washington Post

When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Critic reviews

"It's an impressive start to a writing career that's sure to flourish." (Booklist)

"Doyle's range of accents is perfect for the multiple characters of this epic....On paper Eragon is a sprawling fantasy, filled with obvious nods to Tolkien and too many convenient plot devices. But on audio, it fills the ears with vivid characters, witty dialogue, and nail-biting battle scenes set in a magical world where a beautiful blue dragon and her rider are at the noble center of it all." (AudioFile)

"An impressive epic fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)

First time listening since reading

I loved reading the books back when I was younger. Pretty sure I am twice the age since my first read through.
That said Eragon, the first book in the series feels very young adult, which is forgivable considering the age of the author at the time, and the story picks up steam as the book progresses.
What I can’t get past is the narrator’s performance of Saphira. It just sounds goofy and takes away from the implied reverence/intelligence Dragons are supposed to command.
With the knowledge that there is a potential new TV show in the works, I hope that a multi narrator version of this series could be done. A deep strong voiced female narrator would go miles helping me to enjoy the audiobooks more. Really wishing Tim Gerard Reynolds had done this one.

Just as I remember.

There were are 3 things that surprised me. 1)Saphria's voice stayed gruff and slightly masculine when when she got older. But at the very beginning Eragon does confuse her for a male! It was occasionally hard to hear the emotions in her voice but the narrator does pretty well.
2)Araya's voice was strikingly feminine and almost too "soft" for my taste. Maybe this is to balance out her strengths? Over all this went how I remembered and
3) I'm shocked at how quickly I finished listening to this compared to how long it took me to read.
Those who say Paolini was copying or "borrowing" from Hobbit and Lord of the Rings...well didn't those authors" borrow" from old folktales and put their own twist on it?

Book was Great, but wasn't pleased with Sapphira's

My one complaint was some of the voices. my biggest complaint was that Sapphira sounded more like a man who gargled hard liquor. I get putting a rumble in her voice cause she's a dragon, but could we have made her sound less like a goblin??

My favorite book for so long

Love this story so much. I first read it in middle school, and no matter how many times I read or listen, I never get sick of it. This entire series is amazing and I can't wait for the new book.

A classic fantasy, still as magical as ever

Revisited this fantasy favorite and it's just as magical as I remember. Paolini's world crafting, character building, and language creation all weave a masterful tale that leaves you excited for the books to follow. Still hard to believe that he wrote this at the age of 15! Gerard Doyle's narration makes me nostalgic for when I used to listen to this with my family when I was younger, and his voices and acting performance breathe another layer of life into the story.
