Before he can reveal his real identity to her, he learns that his beloved servant, Pan, has been captured and sold into slavery in the South. Pan's father, to whom Jamie owes a great debt, pleads for Jamie's help, and Jamie agrees, knowing the journey will take him perilously close to Tall Oakes and the ruthless slave hunter who is still searching for him. Meanwhile Caroline's father learns and exposes Jamie's secret, and Jamie loses his home, his business, and finally Caroline.

Heartbroken and with nothing to lose, Jamie embarks on a trip to a North Carolina plantation where Pan is being held with a former Tall Oakes slave named Sukey, who is intent on getting Pan to the Underground Railroad. Soon the three of them are running through the Great Dismal Swamp, the notoriously deadly hiding place for escaped slaves. Though they have help from those in the Underground Railroad, not all of them will make it out alive.

Sequel is just as great!

Sometimes, writers can stretch a story too far and end up weakening it. When I realized the main character would be Jamie Pyke, I was worried that this would be the case. It's not.

This a great story! I was often upset with Jamie's selfishness, but that was set up well in The Kitchen House, and though he grew (like anyone), he was still himself. Grissom kept this character true. What I love most is how well this full cast interacts and has their own voice.

There is so much more I can say, but most importantly, I really loved this series and highly recommend.

Great story!

Loved everything about it! A must read (or listen) for everyone. It's a prime example as to why I love historical fiction

great continued story perfect originality loved it

love the way that it just seamlessly melted from the first story Into the second so you really didn't have to read the first one to catch up with the second one but if you did it was just that much more enjoyable

Another Stellar Story

Kathleen Grissom has done it again. The story held me captive and absolutely wanting more. My biggest disappointment is that there is not a "next book" to read. I'm hoping there is another to create a series for these amazing characters that have come to life through Kathleen's amazing storytelling.

Superb in every way!

I loved this follow up to The Kitchen House. Both were fantastic and it was hard to put it down.

Must listen

I feel this book is a must listen for everyone. Though at times, profoundly sad there were joyous moments, laughter & perseverance.
Though this is a work of fiction I believe it outlined so many truths that happened during the time of slavery. My heart ached for those who struggled in this book. It is a life I'll never know but could easily empathize with the characters portraying slaves and women.
This book was very well written and the readers did an excellent job. I also enjoyed the first book which should not overlooked before listening to this one.

An amazing story.

Well done Ms Grissom! It is rare to find a sequel as good as it's predecessor, but this book exceeds all expectations. Her style is very descriptive, but not overbearing. You can really imagine the characters and the events that are unfolding. Although parts are sad, they are very powerful and there is also some suspense. This is a story that will stay with the reader long after the book has been completed.

Slow for intial start but then i couldn't turn it off. i thoroughly enjoyed it.

A beautiful heart hurt story. The continue story of Kitchen House is wonderful. Would loved it more to know more about Bell and others at Kitchen House.
