“This book may help those who are susceptible to illnesses that can be prevented.”—His Holiness the Dalai Lama

“Absolutely the best book I’ve read on nutrition and diet” –Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones Solution

From the physician behind the wildly popular website NutritionFacts.org, How Not to Die reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death.

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.

The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.

History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks.

In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen -a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor's orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

I have read dozens if not hundreds of books on health and nutrition. I am an A.C.E. Certified Health Coach and Personal Trainer with a specialty in nutrition. This is the best and most complete book that I have ever read. I am going to read it again - right now! Thank you Dr. Greger for this labor of love. Most doctors are clueless when it comes to nutrition. As you said, "A doctor a day keeps the apple away."

Excellent comprehensive book of useful and important information!

Any additional comments?

I wish everyone would read this book!!!

The author narrates the book so well. I feel like he's in the room with me and speaking from the heart and not just reading a script he wrote. The nutrition information is out of this world and so easy to understand. Read this book!

I LOVE THIS BOOK

I listened to this book after having been exposed to Dr. Greger's wonderful work on Nutritionfacts.org and YouTube. Before I could finish my first listen I became a Whole Food Plant Based Vegan and have told my children I can no longer look at them and say "I Love You" and continue to feed them animal products. Although my family does not yet fully understand my reasons, it is my prayer that my family will continue to educate themselves and make their own commitment to protecting the most precious thing they have, their Health. My identical twin sister died at the age of 37 from Lupus and I watched my Maternal Grandparents, my Father as well as all of my Great Aunts and Uncles except one die from some type of cancer or heart, kidney or brain disease. I have lost the vast majority of my family to ill health and though most people believe that this is just what happens when we age I know that there are people and cultures who live long fruitful and active lives. I want to be with my family for a very long time and I want us all to enjoy an active, and joyful long life. I believe that this is our first and most important inalienable right!

BUY MULTIPLE COPIES!!!!!

I wish I had read this book when I was younger! If anyone is - or knows someone who is curious about health - in their teens or 20s, BUY HIM/HER THIS BOOK! Even though I am decades past my 20s the underpaying message through this book is “your body loves you and wants you to be healthy”. Your body forgives you all those foods that harm you, works double overtime to keep you functioning, talk about a wonderful machine right? Very optimistic message for the entire book. Now just imagine how your body will respond if you make a few (or a lot) healthy change. Hopefully my decades of eating whatever I want, followed by decades of eating what I honestly THOUGHT was healthy but really wasn’t much better, will be truly history now that I not only know what to eat (and avoid), but WHY to eat (or not eat) it.
The author read his own book and he did a fine job. Sure he did not have the dulcet voice of some trained orator but in my opinion his voice and mannerisms made the book even better. When Dr. Greger himself emphasized a word or phrase it had far more meaning than if a professional reader did it because I know that Greger purposefully intended to make that word/ phrase stand out.
I normally listen to “who done its” and lighthearted books, so this genre was my first. I can’t say enough good things about it. Given Audibles wonderful love it or get a refund policy, if you are on the fence, just give it a try.
While I don’t know if I would seek out and listen to a similar book written by a different author (I do love my mystery books), in a heartbeat O would pay for ANYTHING written by Dr. Greger.

You’ve got to hear this! Guilt free optimism!
