Publisher's summary

A jaded spy and a shell-shocked country doctor team up to solve a murder in postwar England.

James Sommers returned from the war with his nerves in tatters. All he wants is to retreat to the quiet village of his childhood and enjoy the boring, predictable life of a country doctor. The last thing in the world he needs is a handsome stranger who seems to be mixed up with the first violent death the village has seen in years. It certainly doesn't help that this stranger is the first person James has wanted to touch since before the war.

The war may be over for the rest of the world, but Leo Page is still busy doing the dirty work for one of the more disreputable branches of the intelligence service. When his boss orders him to cover up a murder, Leo isn't expecting to be sent to a sleepy village. After a week of helping old ladies wind balls of yarn and flirting with a handsome doctor, Leo is in danger of forgetting what he really is and why he's there. He's in danger of feeling things he has no business feeling. A person who burns his identity after every job can't put down roots.

As he starts to untangle the mess of secrets and lies that lurk behind the lace curtains of even the most peaceful-seeming of villages, Leo realizes that the truths he's about to uncover will affect his future and that of the man he's growing to care about.

Charming

Plenty of mystery plot with your romance. The side characters are as delightful as the main two. I find this book so soothing, I’ve listened a bunch of times. Can’t wait for the next one.

Great British mystery, Fantastic performance

I discovered the book by searching for works by this narrator. I’m not usually a fan of historicals but since I love Joel Leslie’s work I decided to give it a try. Glad I did. The story is great with crisp, clever writing. The mystery is in the best tradition of Dame Agatha Christie. The main characters draw you in and you root for them. Leslie’s performance is, as usual, outstanding. His narration adds so much to the story and I particularly enjoy when I am using whispersync as I have his voices in my head when I reading as opposed to listening. Great book and performance. Highly recommend.

Just what I needed

This book/listen hit all the right spots for me. I was honestly surprised at how well the author blended mystery and romance. It is very well done. The story is entertaining and the all of the characters are beautifully written. Especially Leo and James.
The narrator is phenomenal. This is the first book I've read by Joel Leslie and I am not disappointed. I love when I find a book that has a narrator that can truly bring it to life.
5/5 all around. I read this book twice and still want to read it again.

An Excellent Listen!

This story combined three of my favorite things: post-WWII storyline, a good mystery and Joel Leslie as narrator. Had a lot of fun with it and really hope the writer does a follow-up.

Engaging story, great performance by Joel Leslie

Joel Leslie is one of my favorite audiobook performers. In fact, he is pretty much responsible for getting me hooked on audiobooks (along with author Victoria Sue). When he had a code giveaway recently, I was lucky enough to win one for Hither Page.

I found the story to be fun to listen to and I loved Leo and James. I thought the writing was very good. I was in awe of the many voices and accents that Joel Leslie had to do for this story; he is excellent at both male and female voices.

I will certainly be listening to more books by Cat Sebastian and audiobooks performed by Joel Leslie.

Marvelous from beginning to end

I read this a few years ago and loved it, but it was one of the first romances I'd read and I thought maybe, now that I've read many, I'd have a different perspective. But this really is a lovely novel. I liked it just as much this time around.

Both main characters are appealing without being perfect. I thought they make a good couple and am rooting for them. Usually I am annoyed by too-fast falling in love and default monogamy before it's earned, but although the book takes place over only a week, the romance rings true, moving in together and expectations of monogamy and all.

Like all of Joel Leslie's work, this one is excellent. He has a peculiar style but it works, particularly for this book.

Narrator

I love listening to the narrator. He does a great job. The story was hard to get into at first but I got so much into it that I got the second book.

A cozy murder mystery

The setting and the whole atmosphere was very reminiscent of Agatha Christie books. Very enjoyable.

Was very intrigued by a subplot hinted at in regards to background characters.
