La narrazione si apre così - "con una semplicità da gran maestro", come scrive ammirato Joseph Conrad – e il lettore si trova immediatamente sul campo di battaglia. La guerra di secessione americana si svolse dal 1861 al 1865. Il segno rosso del coraggio venne pubblicato a puntate in rivista nel 1894 e come libro nel 1895. L'autore era nato nel 1871. Il romanzo, dunque, viene scritto un trentennio dopo la fine degli eventi, da un autore nato anch'egli sei anni dopo la conclusione del conflitto. Eppure ebbe un successo strepitoso, e non solo nell'immediato, ma fu considerato il libro migliore e più "vero" della letteratura americana su quel periodo, su quella guerra e, da molti, sulla guerra in generale, diventando presto un classico.
Tutto ciò può sembrare paradossale, se non fosse, invece, uno dei molti modi di dar corpo all'essenza della letteratura, che può cogliere la verità anche dove c'è solo immaginazione. Siamo in un luogo che potrebbe essere tutti i luoghi, in un giorno qualsiasi, in un anno imprecisato. Quando l'esercito si muove è solo "un vasto spettacolo blu", che si confonde con il fumo delle armi e gli alberi della boscaglia. Quando la battaglia infuria è solo un rombo, un ruggito ininterrotto di cannoni, urla e fucileria, un "animale scarlatto", "un dio gonfio di sangue". E i soldati, che vengono mossi da ordini per loro incomprensibili, non hanno quasi nome. Sono "il giovane", il "ladrone", quello "chiassoso", il "soldato alto", sono nessuno e tutti, uniti da quella fratellanza che trova solo chi si incontra in una situazione di pericolo estremo.
Combattono, fuggono, hanno paura, molta paura, uccidono, vengono uccisi e cadono, rimanendo spesso sul terreno come macabre rappresentazioni della morte, in posizioni innaturali o grottesche, sempre impietose. In mezzo a tutto ciò, il "giovane" deve fare i conti con la paura e con la vigliaccheria che colgono tutti, in momenti simili: "un quadro psicologico della paura" definì Crane il suo libro. Il giovane deve mettersi alla prova e trovare se stesso. Il libro è unico perché è la storia di due battaglie combattute nello stesso tempo: quella contro il nemico, che non ha volto, e quella contro il lato oscuro e miserevole di noi stessi, che crediamo di conoscerci. Come scrive Michele Mari nel suo saggio finale, l'autore "trasfigura l'esperienza del suo protagonista in una surreale allucinazione".
