Publisher's summary

A secret preview into the treacherous journey of a man thrown from a successful life in Silicon Valley into the dark asphyxiating prison of San Quentin, with murders, serial killers, rats, and COVID around every corner. This true story is told by an inmate who was inside, living and breathing in the system of incarceration for nearly two years. He paints a masterpiece of detail by challenging the stigma that prisoners are less than people, that law enforcement is superior, and that the system of incarceration in the United States is still functioning. You will join him in the cell while he recounts hunger strikes, malnutrition, panic, and pandemonium, by weaving comedic banter with a stoic sense of realism.

This is a captivating tale of how sick and dying men, caused by the nationally publicized disaster of thirty deaths in a short period in the prison, stitched together the remnants of their shattered dignity and formed a brotherhood to withstand all odds; it paints the solo journey of a man's struggle through addiction, loss, corruption, oppression, racism, and fear. You won't stop listening to this enthralling and uttering engrossing saga of survival, a triumphant testament to the endurance of the human spirit, loyalty, respect, and the fallacy of rehabilitation while incarcerated.

COOK PACKED A PUNCH WITH THIS AWE-INSPIRING NOVEL

FANTASTIC BOOK! What else can be said? If you are looking for a true story that moves mountains and threatens a corrupt institution, then this is your book. I listened to this while working out, and couldn't stop once I got home. I finished it in record time. His voice carries so much weight but you can't help but feel yourself in his words. This should be taught in classrooms at universities.

Fantastic Book with Excellent Writing

This was my favorite audiobook of the summer that I’ve found. Cook does a magnificent job of making us all feel like we are there with him. He creates a sense of realism by tracking what happened each day. I adored this book and can’t wait to listen to his next one.

Wonderfully Powerful Story

The rising of a strong voice like Cooks in the American literature scene is just what this world needs. I found his witty, sarcastic to all ends, eccentric, and most of all, true account fascinating. He stuck true to this word to deliver a coarse thought-provoking narrative of his time in the slammer. I also enjoyed listening to this book with all the different characters. I highly recommend this audiobook!

Wonderful Book. Worth the time.

I review books quite often and Cook’a novel is one of the best I’ve listened to in a while. He is poignant, powerful with his message, and adds a sense of authenticity that is hard to find in this day and age in writing. The ending was my favorite and you will know what I mean when you finish it. This novel is highly recommended for any reading level.

Cook NAILED it with this incredible book

This isn't just a simple collection of thoughts but an embodiment of wit, humor, and a palpable passion for justice. This is a call for action from not just any voice in the dark, but an educated, well-spoken man, who has seen horrors that most of us don't understand. This is a book I plan on reading again because there are so many meaningful layers. I loved it.

Cook is my new favorite author!

This book is infectiously funny and tragic, all at the same time. It pulls on your heart strings while making you think about how corrupt our criminal justice and police have become. I loved it and I highly recommend it.
