Publisher's summary

Here in his first non-Shannara novel, Terry Brooks has written a gripping story of mystery, magic, and adventure - sure to delight fantasy listeners everywhere.

Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.

The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.

Ben's only followers were the incompetent court magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as court scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.

To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective kings of Landover to duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win.

The task of proving his right to be king seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn....

The joy of being a kid again at middle age

Narration was very well done. Methodically delivered.

The first time I heard about Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom For Sale was when I was 13/14. Not much for fantasy books then or now - the characters, writing and reality of this story really spoke to me as a boy & now as an adult quietly fighting against complacency and fear of mediocrity. It’s about hope, good vs bad, and how decisions all add up to a journey with which one was already destined to fulfill. A romantics version of happiness; learning how to be comfortable in change.

Nearly 28 years later I find myself

A must listen for fantasy lovers!

I read the series years ago, and I enjoyed listening to the first book and will continue with the rest.

Finally!!!

I’ve waited so long for the audible version to come out! Great story, great voice work (except for the dragon). A fairy tale with a modern day twist, this story explores
the basis of friendship, truth and commitment.

Magical adventure with great narration!!

I very pleasantly found myself lost in the story as it unfolded. Terry Brooks takes magical concepts with which we are all familiar and turns them around in very interesting ways, leading to infinite opportunities! These are great characters with a lot of potential for future growth and adventures. Some surprising twists and turns kept me engaged. Jeremy Arthur is a favorite narrator and I'm so glad I chose this story based on that and a recommendation from a friend!

Great story and narration

I really enjoyed this story. It took a few chapters to get into, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed the work building and characters.
It is an almost complete story, and you could stop after book 1 if you wanted. There are no big cliffhangers at the end, just one looming thought about Meeks.

An Old Friend

I enjoyed the narrators ability to switch between voices, especially Philip and Sot.
The story was well told, with the same feelings I had when I read it over 30 years ago.

The series is BACK (on Audible)

Was planning to buy the series when it was listed on Audible a few years ago, but wasn't fast enough and the series was removed. Now in 2022 all six titles are back and re-recorded with another narrator. Having learned my lesson last time, pre-ordered all six and all is well!!
