Publisher's summary

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was 13. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

beautiful and full of emotion!

Amy Harmon’s books always put me through a huge range of emotions. Her romance books aren’t typical insta-love or highly physical stories, all the characters have so much depth to them that it’s almost slow in the beginning but the entire journey of the story is always amazing. Making faces had so much meaning behind the story, at some point in the story every character was faced with a challenge of ‘why them’ and it was just so thought provoking. Ambrose and Fern are great main characters, they both struggle with who they are and grow so much… and let’s just say Ambrose’s story had me bawling, as someone who also got sent to Iraq during the same time frame it hit close to home. While I loved the main characters, I completely thing Bailey stole the show. He was probably the strongest characters I have read about, the way he looked at life and his disease was just awe inspiring! The only part I didn’t care for was the constant jumping around of the time frame. I am used to flash backs in a lot of books but this one just seemed to jump from the present to consistently different times in the past, it took me a while to pinpoint the age and whereabouts of the characters.

Rob Shapiro is a great narrator, I unfortunately haven’t heard much of him other than the King series but I absolutely loved him in this role. He did a great job at playing the light hearted Bean, the deep thinking Bailey and the troubled Ambrose! The true test is when a male can narrate for a female character without making me cringe and this was a completely cringe free book, he just made his voice softer for the female which was perfect!

I am blubbering like an idiot.

This was not my first book by Amy Harmon but it certainly is my favorite. It is so we'll written and honest. The narrator was absolutely amazing. 5 stars from start to finish.

Narration was great!

I have seen bad reviews of the female narrator. Apparently things have changed because only the man narrated the version I heard and he was great! Loved the story. So true of our times.

One of the best

This book was riveting. It made my laugh out loud, cry softly and reminded me even more about real life heroes. You won’t regret the hours spent listening and will find yourself rewinding often

Beautiful

This book was beautiful. I haven't read or listened to a book that made me feel anything like that in such a long time, if ever maybe? It really was beautiful. The narration was perfect. Normally I prefer first person, but this was so well done. I don't cry easily but between the incredible storytelling and the wonderful writing, and the touching moments, I cried.

So much more than a romance.

I would love to see this adapted. The characters are well fleshed out, the story is original and engaging, and the narrator was perfect for this selection. Tired of the same old romance? This is definitely something new.A journey in self discovery and self actualization.
