The story

The Aeronautica Imperialis are the masters of the skies in the 41st millennium, waging wars of breakneck aerial combat where only skill stands between victory and death. Braving the foetid waters of Bacchus and its rampaging greenskin hordes, Simlex is tasked with producing a cinema-pict portraying Shard as an Imperial hero. Shortly after his arrival planetside, however, he discovers the war effort is in shambles—the Imperium’s overstretched forces are in full retreat, the local planetary governor is desperately downplaying the conflict at every turn, and Shard is an arrogant misanthrope who only avoids sanction due to her consummate skills.

But these skills may prove the only hope of survival, for something vast and terrible lurks within the clouds. The Green Storm approaches.

Incredible

Another great tale from a talented writer. This has jumped up into my top five easily!

This story shows us the dark underbelly of the Imperial propaganda war machine, how tales are spun and whom truly is a hero and which ones are not. A fun, fast dive into a fascinating world, one wrecked by war from Orks. A propagandist imbeds himself with a flight squadron of the Aeronautica Imperialis, intent on capturing a realistic vision of war and to truly show what a hero is… Yet politics, personalities, xenos and everything else rears their ugly heads to destroy the truth…

Top gun 40k style

A good listen with well portrayed characters. Almost entirely human perspective, with a bit of orky fun. But the orks too are up to something a bit more than just the usual Wagh. Even servo skulls are given depth with pet-like character and a crucial role in the story. There’s more to things than you will think at the beginning, and the middle, and even the end.

Not bad - a surprisingly good yarn

Based on the cover art and the comments of a few of the reviewers here, I thought this was going to be a dumbed-down Warhammer tale. I knew nobody wrote better flight combat than Dan Abnett, and so I braced for disappointing prose, but I was... entertained. As one of the characters in the book says, it was...'tolerable.' The other reviewers talk about how misanthropic the female lead was, but she didn't come off insincere or unlikable to me. She carries mental trauma to spare, so it's not like she acts this way out of simple snobby arrogance. She was made this way. Also, unlike most 'strong female characters', this one was not some overpowered Mary Sue. She gets crucial assistance from supporting characters and earns every victory she notches. And she's definitely paid a price to achieve that greatness.

Great high flying stuff!

I'm always game for 40k books that are slightly out of the normal scope of what you see, and both the look at the imperial "media" and the aeronatuca imperialis was a instant buy for me. And i wasn't disappointed. This book gives a great look into both of those worlds and expands upon some things with the operation the imperium has with its scholas.

If i had to give one gripe about the book it would be that the narrator's pronunciation at times was downright odd. It was like he was trying to do a imperial voice which he did succeed at, however the emphasis he put on some words and some sentences really threw me off at times.

I highly recommend the book however for anyone new to 40k, or any old hands like me who are looking for something they can bite into that isn't usually covered in the standard scope of the rest of the books black library has on offer.

Terrific Yarn!!

Great story! well written! well performed! fun, exciting, mysterious, scary and thoughtful! reminded me of the ability of genre writers to explore universal human truths. strong recommend. Got to go... about to look for more books by this author. :)

it a jumble but it's good

This book adds a lot of nuances that I liked. Like the idea the Schola Progenium breaks war orphans into something the imperium can use or a propagandist in the 40k universe. Witch is such a great and clever idea that I hope some author takes that Idea and makes a book series out of that. The characters are great and well written but it feels like the book is more concerned with set up for the next books rather than finish this one.

Surprisingly very good

New comer to 40k but this book caught me off guard abit with how well it was put together. if you like aviation, a good narrator, 40k politics and orks outsmarting Einstein with their big brain moves this book is for you. The dogfights have you feeling like you’re in the cockpit! the action is there. I’m on the lookout for more like this. fantastic read

Another great 40k novel

One of my new favorites and expertly narrated by Phillip Sacramento. This was an awesome 40k novel. With action, a kind of a mystery and aerial dogfighting. Whats not to love!

absolutely fantastic

Really unique way of portraying a Warhammer story. Well written and well performed I strongly recommend this title!

a bit cheesy but fun with a neat perspective

it definitely takes some liberties with the lore and feels a bit cheesy at times, but overall an engaging and interesting story told from a unique perspective of an Imperial propagandist. the narration is also quite excellent
