About this listen

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

Darrow - and Reds like him - are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies...even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Best Thing I've Read Since GoT

I tried this book on a whim. I had never heard about it before, but I liked the reviews of everyone else who said it was similar to Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games. I was disappointed with the first one fourth of the book as it seemed to use every single cliche in fiction writing imaginable, but after you get about 1/4 of the way through, Brown takes you for a ride. You may be able to guess some of the characters' intentions, but you won't be able to guess everything that happens. The unexpected twists and turns is what reminds me of GoT, and leans more towards that series than The Hunger Games.

I listened to this entire series and loved every minute of it (except for the parts where Brown wanted me to hate the series). This is one of those book series you tell all of your friends and family to read and can't stop talking about it with those who have read it. This is one of those series where you get home from work, but sit in your car in front of your house because you can't stop listening.

Easily a top 10 audio book

As usual, Tim Gerard Reynolds is great. He is one of the best audible readers you could ask for.

The story started out a little slow, but it was well worth the slow start to learn all the ground work and background of the story. In the second half things really start to get interesting. It is one of those books that you just want to listen to non stop to find out what will happen and who will betray who. I loved this book and would rank it definitely in a top 10 list for fantasy, maybe close to 5 even.

This is not "that" series

You know the one. The one you start and become instantly enthralled with in, only to be disappointed as it progresses into the next installment and the next.

Publishers love novel series for obvious reasons, so much so that it's hard to find anything else in SF and Fantasy, but the form makes demands that not all authors are able to meet. The experience for the reader, all too often, is to become invested in a story that weakens as the series goes on and the author struggles to meet publisher's deadlines and find some resolution for the too-many threads and subplots he or she has introduced--or what's worse, abandons the attempt, leaving readers waiting for a next installment that never comes.

THIS IS NOT THAT SERIES. Nail biting, tightly plotted from start to finish, with complex characters not easily slotted into Manichean categories of good and evil, and with a well worked out and deeply satisfying conclusion. Highest recommendation on all levels, including narration.

One of the best bloody damn books i've ever read.

This book is like the percy jackson series, hunger games and ender all at once; except more intelligent, deep and involving. Delivering all that its predacessors could not; what i deeply craved. All i can say is if you're interested read it, you'll have no regrets. The last thing i have to say is if they make a movie they better not screw it up. Personally i'd prefer a TV show.

Awesome story

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It started a bit slowly but built up fantastic momentum all the way until the end.

Any additional comments?

My only disappointment is that I have to wait for books 2 and 3.

This book is everything. Beautiful language, heart, imagination and a hero well worth rooting for. I am officially addicted.
