Publisher's summary

Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd.

But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for...but she is not Natalie. Whoever the mourning widow is, she’s been married to Todd for almost two decades, and with that fact, everything Jake thought he knew about the best time of his life - a time he has never gotten over - is turned completely inside out.

As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can’t be found or don’t remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake’s search for the woman who broke his heart, who lied to him, soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on a carefully constructed fiction.

Harlan Coben once again delivers a shocking novel that deftly explores the power of past love and the secrets and lies that such love can hide.

Enjoyed it (with a small "but")

Scott Brick is excellent as usual. I gave him and the story 5 stars but the overall score only 4. Perhaps not logical but while I enjoyed my first foray into Harlan Coben's work and even recommended it to others, I have one minor quibble: The main character's heart breaks, turns to dust, shatters or whatever just a little too much.

That being said, it is still a fun ride that will keep you guessing to the very end. It is a unique thriller that won't disappoint.

Excellent Story and Narration

I loved everything about this Harlan Coben story. It was intriguing with many twists. My husband and I listened to it on our trip and we both loved it! Of course, then you have have Scott Brick, who I consider one of the best narrators in the business, and you have a magical combination of excellent storytelling and story! Wow!

Awesome!!

I usually don't listen to books by male authors (except Nicholas Sparks) because they are usually too intense in violence, language or discriptive sex scenes. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I listened to it with my husband and we were both hooked into the story in a short amount of time and couldn't wait to hear more. I also usually don't care for male narrators either but this one was very good. I plan on checking into more of Mr. Coben's books and other books narrated by Mr. Brick!

I like Harlan Coben, but...

....sometimes he does go on. There are things I really like about this book. It is a good mystery for the most part and you'll be drawn into it. I like the characters, particularly the main character and his best friend. The narrator is good. I'd say that the first half of the book was excellent. In the second half, it gets a bit too long and drawn out. At a certain point, I was wondering whether he was being paid by the word. Some of it sounds like a screenplay rather than a novel. That said, I did enjoy it and would say it was definitely worth the credit.

Great story

The story was very different and kept you guessing. I really liked the book but I found the narrator too dramatic and irritating.

Solid Performance with Complicated Plot

Author presents interesting twisted plot, but allows main character to turn introspective too long. This is my first Coben novel, but I'm intrigued enough to listen to a second. I did try his young adult mystery but it didn't appeal to me. There is a flavor and sense of the mystery Rule of Four to this work. Stay Safe is in my library.

Couldn't stop listening

I don't really write reviews or care too much about others and their review on books. Stories can be interpreted in a thousand ways and therefore have thousands of opinions.

But this book is very entertaining. At first it started slow. Once it got started I was unable to stop listening. The narrator was great at making you feel what Jake was feeling or thinking while he was going through this adventure of finding his true love. Story has a lot of misdirection making you think something that might turn out to be completely untrue. But that's the beauty of this story because you always want to find out if what you think is happening is actually happening.

Definitely will be checking out other books by Harlan Coben.

Interesting Story

I kept having to remind myself that the main character's total dedication and undying loyalty stemmed from a very brief affair. Other than that, I liked the characters and story line.
