Publisher's summary

The innovative guide that reveals how eating more fat - the smart kind - is the key to health, longevity, and permanent weight loss.

For years, experts have told us that eating fat is bad. But by banning fat from our diets, we've deprived ourselves of considerable health benefits - and have actually sabotaged our own efforts to lose weight.

Though they originally came from vastly different schools of thought about diet and weight loss, renowned nutritionist Jonny Bowden and well-respected physician Steven Masley independently came to the same conclusion about why so many people continually fail to shed pounds and get healthy. It all comes back to a distinction far more important than calories versus carbs or paleo versus plant based: smart fat versus dumb fat.

In Smart Fat, they explain the amazing properties of healthy fat, including its ability to balance hormones for increased energy and appetite control and its incredible anti-inflammatory benefits. The solution for slimming down - and keeping the pounds off for life - is to "smart-fat" your meals, incorporating smart fats with fiber, protein, and, most importantly, flavor. Bowden and Masley identify smart fats, explain what not to eat, and provide a 30-day meal plan and 50 recipes based on the magic formula of fat, fiber, protein, and flavor.

It's time to unlearn what we think we know about food. Getting smart about fat - and everything you eat - and learning to smart-fat your meals is the only solution you'll ever need.

A guidebook for smart changes

What made the experience of listening to Smart Fat the most enjoyable?

Learning that foods I had been avoiding were actually good for me. For years I endured dry boneless skinless chicken breasts and then one day discovered the joys of a skin on chicken thigh fresh off the grill. Yummo. And what about full fat sour cream? So decadent. I need this in my life! I never want to go back to low fat eating again.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions but using this book and a few others as guidelines I have made changes to my diet that have resulted in dropping about ten pounds from my frame (I am down to 117 and don't desire any more weight loss) and my food is actually more enjoyable to eat. My mood and PMS symptoms have also improved drastically. Buying food, meal planning, and preparing foods have become more of a hobby/lifestyle for me than the nuisance I used to view them as. I look at it as part of pampering myself to eat healthy and buy organic, free range, and grass fed whenever I can.

Any additional comments?

Any advice on eating healthy must be taken with a grain of salt (pun intended.) You must take the advice and sort through it to best fit your life or you will be led astray, unknowingly, by the authors of it. For example, I am a kidney stone former. I need to watch my intake of broccoli, almonds, and spinach because they can contribute to stone formation if I eat too much of them and don't drink enough water to flush out the oxalates. If you don't know this about yourself, you can get into trouble with any advice. Your situation may be different than mine, but you can unwittingly cause harm to yourself eating a lot of healthy foods that may not be ideal foods for you. Do your research and pull the best ideas from many books on nutrition that work for you.

The best of the best

Would you listen to Smart Fat again? Why?

I have listened to this book repeatedly and still keep finding more information I've missed.

Any additional comments?

I'd also recommend Thirty Day Heart Tune Up, Eat Fat Get Thin, and Always Hungry, they're all must reads.

A must read to stay healthy.

Great book on what a person can do to be healthy for many years. Just learning what calcium carbonate does to line our arteries with plaque was mine blowing. So grateful for the all the information in this book.

Good info

Narrator was okay.
Material intriguing. A bit hard to follow without some written info, guidelines and recipes which should be part of this book purchase. They talk about info being on website but the website is very book sales oriented. That being said, the info is important for people to know!
