Publisher's summary

There's a hideous monster on the loose, crushing heads and taking names. But Detective Calvin Kinsey is on the case!

Two years ago, Cal Kinsey was an up-and-coming cop in the Aurora Police Department. But during a fateful nighttime stakeout in search of a prolific killer, Cal witnessed the darkest corner of his dreams come to life. A rogue vampire slaughtered his partner - to put it nicely - and introduced Cal to the supernatural world he never knew existed in the shadows.

Now, Cal is a newly minted detective at the often mocked Department of Supernatural Investigations. By day, the agents of DSI are called "Kooks" by local law enforcement. By night, they're known as "Crows," reviled by the supernatural underworld.

Mere weeks out of the academy, Cal catches his first real case, a vicious murder at a local college. An unknown sorcerer has summoned a powerful creature from the Eververse, a realm of magic and mayhem that borders Earth, and set it on a dangerous warpath through the city.

Between butting heads with his grumpy team captain, stirring up ill will with the local wizards and witches, and repeatedly getting the crap beaten out of himself, Cal must find a way to stop the Eververse monster and send it back to the hell it came from....

...preferably before Aurora, Michigan runs out of coffins for the dead.

Decent book

Like another reviewer I was between book when I took a chance on this one. It's a decent book with good world building making me interested in it, but its ruff around the edges which lay be because it an author early work or not. But I found my self thinking and this is a little awful that the book would be better with out the main character. Over all good may give next book a try to see if MC is matured.

Good

I enjoyed it. It isn’t my favorite story ever and it didn’t knock my socks off, but if you finish a book with a smile, then it was time well spent.

Beautiful

It is definitely fort mature audience with quite a bit of cussing. Clara Coulson's story had great adventure and amazing humor that only added to her epic tale.

A rookie with smarts

The opening of the story centers around police procedures working the crime scene. Our protagonist, Kinsey is called to the scene. Calvin Kinsey is a twenty-two-year-old rookie with the Department of Investigation (DSI) in Aurora, Michigan. DSI investigates the odd or unexplained crimes that regular cops can’t handle. He previously worked as a regular cop. He was tracking a serial killer when his partner was brutally killed by a vampire. Now he works on the elite team for DSI.

• His boss is Nicholas Riker a was once a ferocious fighter before an accident where he was severely injured and lost one agent on his team.
• Ella Dean the fiercest hand to hand combat agent in the department and is Kinsey’s partner.
• Cooper Lee is the nerd who works in the archives and can find the most obscure answer.
• Erica the witch who is with the International Council.
This cadre of people came to work with the supernatural because their lives became derailed by some incident. They became dedicated to fighting the monsters.

The action centers around a demon bashing the heads in of some college students. The demon from Eververse came from the summoning circle. The complexity of the summoning circle indicated a dangerous sorcerer. The fact there was not a banishment done, means whatever crawled out of the circle was still in Aurora. Therefore, there will be a lot of people being killed by the demon unless our agents and witches can banish it.

There is fighting in the story but there is a balance with following police procedures as well. Because Kinsey is a rookie, he tends to use to much magic or doing a bull in the china shop. That give the story more flavor and opportunities for more action. I would get the second book.

Snarky and Fun worth purchasing

This is one of the few authors that I've been excited about in awhile. Characters are interesting and definitely made me want to purchase the next one. However they aren't available on audiobook = ( so hopefully Amazon/Audible with work on getting them made.

Worth the credit

I have to say, I was presently surprised. This book was better than I anticipated. The MC is young and naive to a point, but he has some endearing qualities. He is both brave and stupid concurrently. It will be fun to see how he matures in the next book.

Different

I bought this book when I was in between books. It's a bit odd and drags in some areas. I'm not sure if I will get the next one.
