Four bodies have been discovered along Europe’s riverbanks, placed with care—and completely drained of blood. Pinpricks on their throats indicate a slender murder weapon, but DNA found in the wounds suggests something far more sinister. Tasked with investigating, the FBI recruits Agents Della Hamilton and Mason Carter to Blackbird, an international offshoot of the Krewe of Hunters. Work is a welcome refuge for New Orleans homicide detective Evangeline Theroux. Feeling suffocated by her new baby, in whose eyes she sees only her dead husband, she throws herself into a high-profile murder case. It was inescapably chilling, as if the murderer was methodically working his way down a page torn from the phone book. The three victims brutally killed in their own homes had one thing in common: They were all listed as M. Douglas. The fact that Mara Douglas is next on the list has her jumping at shadows, until FBI agent Aidan Shields shows up to make sure she doesn't become the fourth victim.

Story
Beatrice Poole may be a vicar's daughter, but that doesn't mean she's a stranger to the darker passions. Indeed, she knows enough about gothic terrors to have carved out a highly successful career penning "horrid novels." But now the talented authoress finds herself in the midst of an ominous adventure that rivals anything she's ever written. Her beloved Uncle Reggie is dead, Beatrice suspects that he was murdered - all because of his keen interest in a fabled treasure that may not even exist. Rumors abound that the Forbidden Rings of Aphrodite, said to give their possessor the most unnatural powers, have surfaced in London. Yet Beatrice needs more than rumors to uncover the truth. That's why she's braved the wilds of Devon to seek out a leading authority on antiquities and ancient legends: The famously eccentric, unquestionably reclusive, possibly dangerous Earl of Monkcrest, a man believed to dabble in the supernatural. But bearding the Mad Monk of Monkcrest in his den and dangling the possibility of uncovering a fabulous artifact before him may be the biggest mistake of Beatrice's life. For suddenly, she finds herself joined in an uneasy alliance with a man who is every bit as fascinating as one of the heroes in her novels.

Storey was great
What three words best describe Cristine McMurdo-Wallis’s performance?
I thought her performance was good but her mic was to close. It was distracting to hear her mouth opening or licking her lips. I am not sure if she used a headset or why it felt like I could hear everything thing she did but her telling of the story was good.

Good story, could be even better
I will have to go back and listen to other books in this series. This was actually less fluff than I expected, but I feel I am missing a lot of character development that probably happened before this installment.
The story here is good, but the revelations are far from earth-shattering. As the words flew by, I was much more interested in the people than the mystery, but it was good enough to warrant listening to another book in the series.

Narrator ruined story
The story was good and it was enjoyable. With that being said the narrator ruined the story with her mouth noises. It was like sitting next to someone who eats with their mouth open. There were times I swear I hear outside noise in her microphone. The pauses where she paused her recordings was easy to identify. Sometime it sounded like she had just took a big swig of water. Listening with headphone was in unbearable due to her swallowing noises at the end of sentience’s.

Story: good - Narrator: not so much :(
I enjoyed the story even though some of the dialog was hokey. My only complaint relates to the narrator. Her deep, husky voice was difficult to listen to; particularly her interpretation of male voices. I nearly ground my teeth to bits clenching my jaws listening to this narrator. In the future, I will avoid her readings.
