About this listen

A centuries-old skeleton is discovered in a lonely Scottish Castle. It wears a crown and hides a curse. Swift, the detective friend of Major Heathcliff Lennox, now lives at Braeburn Castle and it was he who uncovered the skeleton. As ghosts are heard and treasure-seekers appear, the murders begin. Really fun!

I really enjoy the Heathcliff Lennox series, and this one did not disappoint. Lennox is funny and quirky, the setting is intriguing, and the characters are interesting. Was definitely left guessing until the end.

So intriguing

I loved this story and the appearance of Ivar was especially exciting as well as the connection to Vinland. My husbands genealogy has traced back to Ivar the Boneless. So it was a neat connection. Again I LOVED the narration, Sam Dewhurt is wonderful. Can't wait to start the next book in your series. I've never cared for murder mysteries but your books are a great collaboration of history and mysterious curiosity.

Highly entertaining

This series is not your typical cozy mystery. The protagonist is male but the author is female. The hero isn't perfect and can at times be quite annoying but the stories are very interesting. I got to learn a little Scottish folklore from this book, too. The narrator is fantastic and production values are very high. I couldn't wait to finish the book and then was a bit sad it was over.

Halloween murders

If you enjoy Agatha Christie, you will love this work. It's a nice respite from modern day murder mysteries.

And Norsemen!

lore, island-life, Scotland, family-dynamics, friendship, archaeologist, ex-cop, amateur-sleuth, dog, cats, clan-feud, clairvoyant, class-consciousness, murder, murder-investigation*****

1921 and the Great War is over. Former Scotland Yard Detective Jonathan Swift is living on a Scottish Isle with his new wife and a skeleton in his home office so he calls on his friend, Major Lennox to help him with things. Lennox reluctantly agrees, brings his former batman plus his dog named Mr Fogg but the little kitten stows away. Another person who sticks along is an older woman he doesn't even know who is a clairvoyant. Once there he finds a cranky Laird, several archaeologists including a very interesting bone specialist, and very soon the first recent body.
Think Mel Brooks with Agatha Christie performed by John Cleese! What a hoot! And the mystery progression with all it's red herrings and plot twists is very good as well. The characters certainly are!
Sam Dewhurst-Phillips did a wonderful job with all the voices and really acted out the story and did not just read it. His voice brings the characters to life with His inflections entirely suited the situations and characters.

Beautifully written Cozy

A gorgeously written cozy mystery with fun characters, a wonderful MC, pets with personality, atmosphere galore, and a treasure hunt, all on an island with a crumbling castle—seriously, what more could you want in a cozy?
Clean for those who care, with laugh out loud moments, this is one I’ll listen to again. This was my first Heathcliff Lenox mystery and I’m so excited to have found a new author and new sleuth to follow around for vicarious adventures. I’m excited to go back to the beginning and read the rest.
The reader, it has to be mentioned, was absolutely phenomenal. He did a magnificent job with the various voices and accents, even the women, and has wonderful range and a truly beautiful voice. I’ll be looking out for more books read by him as well.

Homage to many

This is a bit of Agatha Christie, the pink Panther and Mr Jeeves, probably others I didn’t even catch. It could be a real mess but it works for me. A fairly good mystery, a bit of history, a humorous caricature.

A favorite!

Loved this story, narrator, and Major Heathcliff Lennox. And a great setting in a Scottish castle with ancient history.
