Excellent Story

Tramping through the gutters and effluvium of society with a young constable in search of the truth of her father's unusual death, Catriona finds out the uglier side of the man she thought she knew. I loved it. The reveal of the truth comes in bits and pieces, culminating in a fantastic tale that is sure to bring a bit of a shiver to your spine. Once started, I couldn't stop until the end...nearly 7 hours later. If you like a good mystery and a bit of a ghost story, this is just for you.

This was really good!

It took me a little while to get into it and make sense if the story and I’m really glad I stuck with it. I truly enjoyed the story and I’m disappointed that it’s over. The sound effects were good and the actors did a fantastic job! I’ll be looking for more of these original plays from now on. Thanks Audible, for the free selection this month. I likely wouldn’t have chosen it otherwise and now you’ve turned me on to an entirely new sort of genre.

exciting mystery

The performance was great but the story had a few points that didn't seem to connect.

The ending left you wanting more.

Excellent performances drowned in misery

While the performances in this unsettling Victorian mystery are excellent, the frequent breaks for attempted assault, actual and attempted rape, physical and emotional abuse of women, and just a general air of misery left me a combination of annoyed and exhausted. I’ve rarely come across a heroine like Catriona whose intelligence is outweighed by her lack of sense and self-preservation. Her eventual return to sense and reason, at the expense of her respect for, and the lives of, the men around her, left a sour taste, particularly when weighed against the overwhelming, and absurd, level of tragedy that dominates the back end of the story. Even the ghost story aspect was steeped in horrific trauma, resolving in a fashion that I am not sure I would call satisfying so much as... just, perhaps. Everyone in this story, I suppose, got what they earned or deserved.

This was one of the free titles within the Audible member for April ‘19, and I am somewhat glad it was part of that benefit, and that it was not a title that I used a credit on. I do not know that I would ever listen to another piece written by this author, though, as unpleasant as the story was, the performances were outstanding.

Listened to it in one go

It was creepy and riveting. The story got my attention and held it till the end. The only reason it didn't get a 5 star from me was because a character I liked got killed off other than that it was a creepy spooky ghost story mystery that was 5 stars.

Beware though, this book is heavy adult with adult themes and topics as well as rape and attempted rape that is a part of the main story. Those parts are cringey and may not be something you want to read/listen to. This book is definitely for more mature audiences.

Nostalgic for old time radio

Very much like the radio shows I used to listen too as a kid. Couldn't get enough!
