A haunted house story unlike any other, Michael McDowell's The Elementals (1981) was one of the finest novels to come out of the horror publishing explosion of the 1970s and '80s. Though best known for his screenplays for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, McDowell is now being rediscovered as one of the best modern horror writers and a master of Southern Gothic literature.

Creepy and so good!
Get this one! It’s creepy, but not gross. Scary but not in the slasher way. There was just the right amount of supernatural to make it interesting. You won’t be disappointed!

The growing suspense is addictive
The plot twists are really riveting. I did get a little confused about Odessa's role. Early in the book she sounds articulate and "normal" where later on she seems more simple/juvenile

Wondering why Bray agreed to this
RC Bray is great as always. If you’re looking for background, family history and relationship insights on every character, for the first half of a book, you’ll enjoy this. Maybe. It dragged on so much, that I can safely assure you that I won’t listen to this author again, not even for free, should another of his books be priced reasonably.

Pretty good read
Interesting story and good performance. Wished India and Luker didn't speak to each other the way they did. It was disconcerting the way the father spoke to his daughter. Otherwise, It was engaging.

such great characters and freaking scary
oh man. I had given up on finding anything new ( to me, i actually like that this book is older) and scary or even just well written. this book was such a wonderful surprise. I loved the characters and setting and the ending had me completely engrossed and scared as he'll. I'm going to look for more books by the author asap.

Stephen King of the South
I found out about this book on Reddit and I am not disappointed! I grew up in the south and know this setting very well. It was awesome to have a story told that is set on the gulf coast just before it got covered in condos and tourists. If you’re a fan of southern literature and stories that are a little spooky this’ll scratch that itch!

A great listen for Spooky Season
This novel is truly strange and frightening—it sticks in the mind and almost makes you see things out of the corner of your eye. I found listening at 90% speed perfect. Unfortunately this edition is missing the creepy prologue, although the events of the prologue are recounted in Chapter 1.
