Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of A Killer’s Wife comes an intense tale of revenge as Solomon Shepard falls prey to a vicious ex-con, who claims the prosecutor put him away for a crime he didn’t commit.

After a traumatic injury took him off the job, prosecutor Solomon Shepard is back to work, teaming up with Sheriff Billie Gray to hunt down Utah’s most dangerous criminals. Shepard has spent years away from crime scenes and courtrooms, but one of those criminals still holds a grudge.

Alonso Hafeez is out of prison after eleven years, and he’s determined to prove that Shepard tried him for a crime he didn’t commit. And he’s got something special planned: kidnapping Shepard and forcing him to revisit Hafeez’s case in an elaborately staged retrial.

As Hafeez descends further into delusion, Shepard’s only choice is to play along with the ex-con’s rapidly deteriorating sense of reality. Meanwhile, Sheriff Gray is working herself to the breaking point as she races to find them before Hafeez’s plans take a deadly turn.

With Hafeez playing judge and jury, hell-bent on proving his innocence, Shepard will be the only guilty party left to execute.

Quite a story

Victor Methos always does a great job with his stories and this one’s no exception. The villain in the story is something that would be out of someone’s nightmares! The description alone, as well as his size makes you want to run. The protagonist who is the prosecuting attorney Shepard, who is quite a unique character, had worked to put this man in jail 11 years prior. Now
the guy is out for revenge. How old is revenge is orchestrated and played out makes for the tension in this thriller! Don’t miss out on this one!!

I like this series

The second book in the Shepard & Gray Series where Solomon Shephard is a prosecuting attorney recovering from the deadly courtroom attack that almost ended his career and Billie Gray a sheriff who he teamed up with in the first edition.

Felon, Alonso Hafeez is out of prison after eleven years believing he was wrongly incarcerated after convicted of a crime he didn't commit at the hands of Shephard. He kidnaps Solomon and engages an elaborate to re - create the trial, hell - bent on proving his innocence.

I enjoy Victor Methos' book and enjoyed the first book in this series but found there was a lot of violence in this edition.

Strange, pointless plot

I only finished this book because I love this author. I kept waiting for it to get better, it did not.

The ending just kept going and going...

Decent Story with the take on fixing some inequalities in the law. The problem, for me, is that the ending just kept going. Towards the end, the take is that the justice system was to blame because the bad guy who enjoys killing people, couldn't verify what he did. I want to see reforms in the legal system on both sides... not just the prosecution but the abuses of the defense as well.

OK story with distracting multiple narrators

Story wasn't too bad, but with three different narrators, it was kind of distracting.

Timothy Andres Pabon is excellent (did the first Shepard & Gray book), but the other two new narrators are not nearly as good as him. Really distracting with arbitrary changes during different chapters. Stick with Pabon on the next release to make the listening experience better.

Good plot ruined by late character behavior

that defies believability and the villain that never dies. It’s almost like Methos gave up and went with hackneyed action that had me saying out loud, “Oh, come on, really.” If it weren’t so close to the end I’d have probably stopped listening. Made a decent crime novel into a poorly crafted made for TV script.
