Publisher's summary

Three brothers, Don, Bill, and Rusty Halliway are used to being outdoors. They spend their summers helping out with their family business shuttling passengers, fisherman, and cargo on “The Janice Kay” around Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota. The boys have an uncanny ability to get themselves wrapped up in one adventure after another. If a situation arises, the three boys somehow end up in the middle of it. While this does become trying for their parents, it does prevent life from becoming monotonous. In this adventure, the Halliway boys find themselves on a scientific expedition inside the Arctic Circle. But, wait – is the expedition really scientific? Or is something more sinister going on? Don Halliway stared at him. "I don’t follow you at all, Slip. What’s this about?" The Mountie took a deep breath. "We have reason to believe that this expedition you’re going on may not be all that it is supposed to be." "Now wait a minute," Don countered. "Before I even talked with Dr. Bradshaw I did a little checking. He’s one of the leading ornithologists in the country. This is a legitimate scientific expedition. I’m convinced of it." "I didn’t quite say what I intended to," the officer answered. "If the expedition was a fraud our problem would be simple. The government could deny them permission to go and that would be that. But it is legitimate and we have no real reason for keeping them out of there. At the same time, we have been informed that some person or persons may be planning to use the expedition as a cover for a serious piece of espionage." Don Halliway’s face blanched. "Espionage?" he echoed. "Are you sure?" "That is the information we get. It isn’t the sort of proof that would stand up in court, but it has proved reliable in the past." "But what would they have to spy on up there?" Don asked. "We’re going north of Baffin Island to a spot some 400 miles into the Arctic Circle. As I understand it, there are only a few Eskimos, a mounted police station, and a Hudson Bay Company store." "And," Slip added, "one of the most important and secret radar installations our governments have."
