Publisher's summary

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy's instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea's forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors from both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?

They have no choice. If the demigods don't succeed, Gaea's armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

Percy Jackson is the eponymous hero of the best-selling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. He made his debut in The Lightning Thief at just 12 years old, where he discovered the shocking truth about his parentage: He is a demigod, the son of a mortal woman and the god Poseidon. Beyond his own series, he was one of the protagonists in the Heroes of Olympus series and has since appeared in other spin-off novels and series from Riordan.

Great book

The change of narrators caught me by surprise, halfway through a series, but it was still a good one. Listening to books is a great way to appreciate a story. I loved all the different characters voices and the dramatic tone in which he narrated. I love the shifting point of views.

Bad Reader

I love this book, but I'm not a fan of this voice actor. He makes everyone sound pretty much the same. There are a few times when he'll try out a new voice but then immediately drop it and go back to his neutral voice. It gets confusing.

One of the best so far

These just keep getting better. I see a lot of reviews about the narrator but I don’t think those people listened to the whole book. He does a pretty good job I’ve just seen complaints about his Annabeth but I got used to it quick.

Review

Amazing story. This book shows the bravery of Percy and Annabeth as they make their way though Tartarus. I am very exited to read the final book.

The only way to listen to this guy...

is to listen to the story on 1.5x speed on audible. OMG, he is SO BAD. I of course finished this story last year when it came out, I was seriously disappointed then, and I feel this sense of doom every time I think about it. I'm writing this review now, because having waited for The Blood of Olympus for all this time, it will be out in a couple of weeks, and IT's THE SAME LOUSY NARRATOR!! I have not listened to any of Nick Chamian's work, I only know he is absolutely not the right narrator for this story.

I am so so so disappointed. Oh Joshua Swanson, where art thou?

Enjoy the series, not the performance

Where does The House of Hades rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've enjoyed all of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson books, and the Heroes of Olympus books take the 7 of the prophecy closer to the final showdown. For the most part, the characters are well fleshed out and interesting, and they are always fun.

What did you like best about this story?

Fun and unique

How could the performance have been better?

Joshua Swanson, who did the first 3 in this series, was a much more engaging narrator. Nick Chamian takes weird pauses, makes unnatural inflections, and just doesn't have a compelling voice - I find myself drifting sometimes when listening. He does better with the voices than the straight narration, but I was very disappointed overall in the performance based on my experience with the other Percy Jackson and the Egyptian-gods based books.
