Story
C. S. Lewis is the 20th century's most widely read Christian writer and J. R. R. Tolkien its most beloved mythmaker. For three decades they and their closest associates formed a literary club known as the Inklings, which met weekly in Lewis' Oxford rooms and a nearby pub. They read aloud from works in progress, argued about anything that caught their fancy, and gave one another invaluable companionship, inspiration, and criticism.

J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

Story
The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son was originally published in the 1953 edition of Essays and Studies. In December of that year, J.R.R. Tolkien took possession of a reel-to-reel tape recorder and, some time during the first few months of 1954, decided to record ‘the whole thing on tape’ as a way of ‘testing’ the performative quality of the dramatic dialogue between Tídwald and Torhthelm.

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Story
For over half a century, scholars have labored to show that C. S. Lewis' famed but apparently disorganized Chronicles of Narnia have an underlying symbolic coherence, pointing to such possible unifying themes as the seven sacraments, the seven deadly sins, and the seven books of Spenser's Faerie Queene. None of these explanations has won general acceptance, and the structure of Narnia's symbolism has remained a mystery.

From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Publisher's summary
During the 1930s at Oxford, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams - remarkable friends, writers, and scholars - met regularly to discuss philosophy and literature and to read aloud from their own works in progress. Calling themselves the Inklings, their circle grew. It was in this company that such classics as The Lord of the Rings, The Screwtape Letters, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe first found an audience.
Author Humphrey Carpenter was born in Oxford and was acquainted with Tolkien, Hugo Dyson, and several other Inklings. In this remarkable reconstruction of their meetings and momentous friendships, Carpenter brings to life those warm and enchanting evenings in Lewis' rooms at Magdalen College, when their imaginations ran wild. His account offers exciting insights into the influence these brilliant individuals had on each other's developing ideas and writing.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

The Oxford Inklings tells the story of the friendships, mutual influence, and common purpose of the Inklings - the literary circle which congregated around C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Meeting in pubs or Lewis' college rooms, they included an influential array of literary figures. They were, claimed poet and novelist John Wain, bent on 'the task of redirecting the whole current of contemporary art and life'. Tolkien and Lewis expert Colin Duriez unpacks the Inklings' origins, relationships, and the nature of their collaboration.

The First World War laid waste to a continent and brought about the end of innocence — and the end of faith. Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, however, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis found that the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination.

J.R.R. Tolkien's creations, imagination, and characters captured the attention of millions of readers. But who was the man who dreamt up the intricate languages and perfectly crafted world of Middle-earth? Tolkien had a difficult life, for many years: orphaned and poor, his guardian forbade him to communicate with the woman he had fallen in love with, and he went through the horrors of the First World War. An intensely private and brilliant scholar, he spent over 50 years working on the languages, history, peoples, and geography of Middle-earth,

Story
During the first three decades of the 20th century, eugenics, the scientific control of human breeding, was a popular cause within enlightened and progressive segments of the English-speaking world. This prophetic volume counters the intellectual nihilism of Nietzsche, while simultaneously rebuking Western notions of progress - biological or otherwise. Chesterton expands his criticism of eugenics into what he calls "a more general criticism of the modern craze for scientific officialism and strict social organization."

The Company They Keep is the first and most complete examination of the Inklings and their close literary collaboration. C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien met each week with a community of fellow writers at Oxford in the 1930s and 1940s, all sharing their works-in-progress. Diana Pavlac Glyer invites readers into the heart of the group, examining diary entries and personal letters and carefully comparing the rough drafts of their manuscripts with their final, published work.

The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are quite possibly the most widely read pieces of literature written in the 20th century. But as Professor Michael Drout illuminates in this engaging course of lectures, Tolkien's writings are built upon a centuries-old literary tradition that developed in Europe and is quite uniquely Western in its outlook and style. Drout explores how that tradition still resonates with us to this day, even if many Modernist critics would argue otherwise. He begins the course with the allegory of a tower....

Perspective of biographer unsympathetic
I did not enjoy the way the author had a slant against CS Lewis as being brash, a poser, impressionable, unoriginal, closed-minded, etc. Let’s see if that author can write anything that holds a candle to Lewis’ brilliance and impact. Come on! It felt like he was trying to cut him down with 80% of his comments. He seemed to “like” Tolkien and Williams much more, and it was obvious and I hate that. Other than that, I enjoyed hearing about this set and their lives.

Wonderful writeup
It is profound how one man sharpens another. I find it a necessary part of my life to have a group of similarly minded (but not necessarily similarly dispositioned) people in my life. Lo, in this day and age it is practically impossible to share the frequency of comradery these men had. I find Lewis a kindred spirit in this if not in common disciplines or hobbies. I bring men into fellowship and we share our ideas, life experiences, opinions, and observations for a few hours every other week or so. We also do not keep records of our discussions or any sort of formal structure.
I mourn the deaths of all these men in this book though all passed before I was born. I think myself below all of them, for they were geniuses each in his own right and form. Lewis in his simple writing style and masterful debate form. Tolkien in his imagination and staunch tenacity to develop logic and continuance through story and myth, as well as his linguistic aptitude. Williams’ thought and propensity to see the world in spiritual and physical capacities, though I disagree intensely with his theology. Warreny in his ability to hold his own in the company of such literary minds who would ascend to the status of legend and giants.
I miss all of them though I knew none of them. I miss the times when the world was simpler. I long for a return to something I never knew.

Very interesting story of CS Lewis and the Inklings
Overall I really enjoyed the book and learning about all the Inklings and how it all came about. It has certainly made me interested in reading the work of the others. My one critique would be that, in listening to Mr. Carpenter's opinions of Tolkien and Lewis, I feel as though he didn't quite understand some of their views, especially that of Lewis. In the later chapters, where he discusses Lewis' work, it felt as though it was completely missing the point, specifically in the theological symbolism.

A great find for any Inkling fan
Good narrator (he sounded very much like Michael Caine to me), and I was willing to overlook his mispronunciation of some of Toklien's words. It was a thorough and well rounded accounting of the Inklings, albeit with a heavy focus on C.S. Lewis.

Informative Book
C.S. Lewis, J. R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams formed the ultimate book club called the Inklings. They discussed the ancient literature, had readings of each other’s books and intellectual conversations about literature. Other literary minds also move in and out of this circle. This book was based on the life and literary careers of these three main authors and how they influenced each other both in life and the written word. It is written as a history book but the content is good.
**The narrator has strong pronunciation of whistling “S.” It can be overwhelming at times.

Well worth the time if you at all enjoy Inklings writers.
Already a big Lewis and Tolkien nerd, this book makes me feel like I actually know them. It also introduced me to Charles Williams, whose works I’m now going to investigate. It spends the most time, appropriately, with Lewis, as he was certainly the nucleus of the Inklings, but all are given a fair treatment.
