Publisher's summary

Have you ever driven several miles without noticing anything on the road or read a page in a book without registering any of it? Do the day's worries and disappointments crowd your mind as you're trying to fall asleep at night? Do you feel stressed much of the time and aren't sure how to find peace?

In this book Amit Sood, MD, MSc, a Mayo Clinic specialist in stress and resiliency, reveals how the mind's instinctive restlessness and shortsightedness generate stress and anxiety and presents strategies for living a more peaceful life. The book is based on the highly popular stress management program offered at Mayo Clinic that Dr. Sood developed after two decades of work with tens of thousands of people.

Drawing on groundbreaking brain research, Dr. Sood helps you understand the brain's two modes and how an imbalance between them produces unwanted stress. From this basis you learn skills that will help you:

  • Develop deep and sustained attention
  • Practice gratitude, compassion, and acceptance
  • Live a meaningful life
  • Cultivate nurturing relationships
  • Achieve your highest potential

All of these concepts are weaved into a practical and fun journey that has been tested in numerous scientific studies, with consistently positive results. Take the first step to discover greater peace and joy for you and your loved ones.

His happiness book is a must read. I have a concussion and reading is excruciatingly difficult with short term memory issues. I get no where. Thankful this one is audible.

Momentous book, bad title, horrid reader

This is one of the best, most helpful, books I’ve ever read. However, I cannot listen to it without wincing and going back to my Kindle version. As to the title, it’s so embarrassingly bad for this thoughtful of a book - more like a title of a handout brochure in a hospital corridor. It has stopped me from recommending it to those who might benefit from it.

Great content, terrible narration

This is a great book ruined by an incredibly annoying voice of the narrator. He sounds like a condescending Ivy League law professor. You should have had someone with a soothing voice. This guy is the opposite of that. Sooo annoying.

I believe everything the author wrote

I believe everything the author wrote. But, it is like a diet or weight loss book, The only way for all of that wisdom to do the reader any good is if he or she does the work of putting the knowledge into practice as a lifestyle change. It isn't good enough to read about the ideas. To be effective and life changing they must move from being an object of study to ideas for action.

The performance talent's voice reminds me a lot of Mo Rocca, the host of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation on CBS. The difference is the voice talent wasn't trying to be funny and it is a long book for that cadence. I assume it is just his way of articulating himself. So, if you like Mo Rocca you might like this performance. If you aren't a fan of the humorist then the performance might turn you off from a very good book. It isn't bad. It is a professional reading of the book. The tone just sounds incongruous with the subject matter to me. Even if you don't like the performance I urge you to stick with the book. I believe it can be a life changer.

life changing

the year 2020 broke me, my mental self was lost. this book has helped me see that it's not my fault and I have concrete steps to follow to improve myself for the rest or my life. a lifelong journey has been born in myself as a result of this book. I have a fear and avoid self help books, I've never read one but I worked my way through this book and am incredibly grateful that I did.

Very informative

This is a wonderful body of work. Very insightful and informative. The narrator putts, perhaps a little too much emphasis into the matter, but after a while I got use to it.
