About this listen
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER
“[An] ingenious jigsaw puzzle of a book...highly entertaining.” —The New York Times
“The queen of found footage thrillers.” —Julia Bartz, New York Times bestselling author
A whip-smart and “fast-paced mystery” (The Daily Telegraph, London) from the internationally bestselling author of The Twyford Code and The Appeal about a true crime journalist who revives a long-buried case about a cult—and finds herself too close to the story.
Everyone knows the story of the Alperton Angels: the cult who brainwashed a teenage girl into believing her baby was the anti-Christ. When the girl came to her senses and called the police, the Angels committed suicide and mother and baby disappeared.
Now, true crime author Amanda Bailey is looking to revive her career by writing a book on the case. The Alperton baby has turned eighteen; finding them will be the scoop of the year. But rival author Oliver Menzies is just as smart, better connected, and also on the baby’s trail.
As Amanda and Oliver are forced to collaborate, they realize that the truth about the Angels is much darker and stranger than they’d ever imagined, and in pursuit of the story they risk becoming part of it.

Forty years ago, Steven “Smithy” Smith found a copy of a famous children’s book by disgraced author Edith Twyford, its margins full of strange markings and annotations. When he showed it to his remedial English teacher Miss Iles, she believed that it was part of a secret code that ran through all of Twyford’s novels. And when she later disappeared on a class field trip, Smithy becomes convinced that she had been right.

Story
The Christmas season has arrived in Lower Lockwood, and the Fairway Players are busy rehearsing their festive holiday production of Jack and the Beanstalk to raise money for a new church roof. But despite the season, goodwill is distinctly lacking among the amateur theater enthusiasts with petty rivalries, a possibly asbestos-filled beanstalk, and some perennially absent players behind the scenes. Of course, there’s also the matter of the dead body onstage. Who could possibly have had the victim on their naughty list?

A young woman living with her father and her sister (to whom she has reluctantly but devotedly become a mother following the death of their own mother years prior), Manod can't shake her welling desire to explore life beyond the beautiful yet blisteringly harsh islands that her hardscrabble family has called home for generations.

Iðunn is in yet another doctor's office. She knows her constant fatigue is a sign that something's not right, but practitioners dismiss her symptoms and blood tests haven't revealed any cause. When she talks to friends and family about it, the refrain is the same—have you tried eating better? exercising more? establishing a nighttime routine? She tries to follow their advice, buying everything from vitamins to sleeping pills to a step-counting watch. Nothing helps. Until one night Iðunn falls asleep with the watch on, and wakes up to find she’s walked over 40,000 steps in the night.

In early 2001, a lethal disease breaks out on the hill farms of northern England, emptying the valleys of sheep and filling the skies with smoke as they burn the carcasses. Two neighboring shepherds lose everything and set their sights on a wealthy farm in the south with its flock of prizewinning animals. So begins the dark tale of Steve Elliman and William Herne. As their sheep rustling leads to more and more difficult decisions, the struggles of the land are never far away. Steve’s only distraction is his growing fascination with William’s enigmatic and independent wife, Helen.

This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt.

Multiple viewpoints contemporary suspense
There is virtually no prose here, it is all first person viewpoints in text messages, email messages, WhatsApp, messages, and a few newspaper articles. So it reads like a series of conversations. Takes a little getting used to, but the story is complex and ultimately engrossing. Even satisfying. Good narration by all.

Almost wish I had just read this instead of listening. The narrative is a bit confusing when listening as almost an audio drama - the story is pretty intriguing but I found myself lost at points due to the shifting narrative played by the same actors.

Unpredictable ending
The story was initially a little difficult to follow, the various types of documents described and learning the characters, but when the pieces starting coming together I could stop listening. The voices for the story were excellent as well. I can usually predict the ending of mystery novels, but I was thoroughly shocked by this one. I will definitely recommend this to others and look forward to reading the author’s other books.

Masterfully constructed
This book has a really cool structure in that the way that its parts come together is clever and satisfying. I found it to be a bit weirdly paced, though. A lot a lot happens at the end and very little happens in the middle parts.

Angel Heart meets Slow Horses
Found this audio book to be particularly engaging from the get go - so much to parse through, written with humor and finesse, excellent pacing of narrative and character development. Very stimulating, keeps you guessing, and deft at whetting the appetite for more. Almost fell in love with it - although somehow felt a little disappointed by the finale.
