Publisher's summary

Constant Marlowe follows a serial killer deep into the dark heart of a small town in this riveting novella by Jeffery Deaver, the New York Times bestselling author of The Broken Doll collection and the Colter Shaw series.

Special Agent Constant Marlowe is tasked with taking over the investigation of an obsessed serial killer trolling the small town of Clark Valley in the quiet—and eerie—plains of the Midwest. Two female victims in quick succession, the same brutal MO, and every indication that victim number three is only days away. Also in the killer’s scope is Constant herself. When she interviews a local family who may be potential witnesses, she leads the devil to their doorstep, throwing their lives into chaos. Constant will do anything to protect them, but it won’t be easy. Because nothing in Clark Valley is quite what it seems.

worth the listen

Truly cannot understand the bad reviews I've read about this novella. The narration is mediocre at best. Currently on my second listen to see what information I missed the first time. I really don't need to find a main character likeable in order to appreciate a story, and I think the author accomplished a lot in the shortened timeframe. I have an over-inflated ego with psychological thrillers... because I can generally figure out the ending. this one was not as easy to decipher... excellent red herrings.

Narration put me to sleep

The story was decent but the narrator gave it no life. Not quite a monotone but lacked any enthusiasm. Yawn!

Intriguing Characters and Surprising Plot

I was pleased to read a Deaver Novella included in the Plus catalog. Just a great suspense story, with characters you want to know more about! I listened to it twice, back to back, for little important clues I didn't want to miss.

Disjointed story, interesting protagonist

Not my favorite Jeffrey Deaver story - disjointed with a truly grotesque twist midway through. Constant Marlowe is an interesting character that would be worthy of following. This novella’s ending leaves room for further stories featuring her.

Epic twist

I won't give anything away, but I will say I did not expect the ending.

Great twists

Loved the story, hate when they don’t end. Plot twists are great in this one. Keeps you guessing.

Very good!

Even though it’s a short story, can’t wait for the next part of the story.

More Constant Marlowe please!

What at first seemed a by-the-numbers short thriller captured me early on, and by the end I loved it. Characters that I genuinely liked and want to know more about and a story that took enough turns to be unpredictable and engaging. Definitely want more of the main character, Constant Marlowe! Deaver has a long career of great characters, but I hope he’ll spend some more time with this one. She’s great and worthy of her own series!

OK, but nothing special

The central plot gimmick is original and interesting, but the characters are two dimensional and the narration was just ok.
