Publisher's summary

The complete Torchship series in a single volume!

Torchship: A captain who’ll take any job if there’s enough money in it. A pilot with an agenda of her own. And a mechanic with an eye on the pilot. The crew of the Fives Full are just trying to make enough money to keep themselves in the black while avoiding the attention of a government so paranoid it’s repealed Moore’s Law. They’re not looking for adventure in the stars, but they’re not going to back down just because something got in their way.

Torchship Pilot: War is bad for business. The crew of the freighter Fives Full want to enjoy the profits of their dangerous voyage, but when war breaks out, they're pressed into service for missions a warship can't do. Winning the war demands pilot Michigan Long act ruthlessly...and may cost her her conscience and her marriage.

Torchship Captain: Michigan Long blackmailed her enemies into joining the war against the AIs. Now, the secret she used is leaking out, and the Fusion is shattering. Caught in the middle of a civil war, she will have to use any weapon that comes to hand - her wits, her ship, her mate.

Great Story but Weak Narration

I very rarely listen to a book twice, and never before one that lasted 39 hours, but I enjoyed it both times through. The story is compelling and adheres to the laws of physics admirably. I was initially confused by the accelerations of manned ships at 10 or 20 G's until I realized that a "grav" in this series is 1/10 of a standard gravity (about 9.8 meters/second squared). The storyline is compelling and has enough twists and turns to hold the listener's attention firmly in place. If Robert Heinlein were alive today, this is the type of book he would have written. I really can't say enough good about the story.

The narration is a different issue. Laura Gallagher has the irritating habit of halting mid-sentence, as in "He opened.... the locker." The combination of her slow, simplistic narration, and mid-sentence halts, combined with her excessive inflections often presented for female voices was bad enough that when a friend or family member would overhear the narration, they would always ask me to turn it off because it was so irritating. I have three adult sons who enjoy a good space opera and would love this story but each of them upon hearing the narration, elected to not listen to the series.
